yah you must buy a Y-USB cable for your external hardisk. this is connection both ends are one is for hardisk and the other two cable is for USB slot of computer. why it two wires connection to usb because one wire is for Data and the other is for Power. If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. You can make it slave with jumper settings check in back side of harddrive you can see jumper which is connected to 2 pin of harddrive.
Read instruction on harddrive you can read how to set jumper for make it slave.
Then you ca use it as slave.

No external hdd has a cd or a manual, cause their is none required for it. It is as simple as using a flash drive. You need to go into My Computer (if using XP ) or Computer Window ( if using Vista or 7 ) and when you connect the Seagate to the computer you will be able to see an option poping up under removable storage devices. If it does not come up then return the product, its bad.

u can try some hit and trial...
1 - keep ur USB HD off and switch on the PC then switch on the power on USB HD
2 - try another USB port
3 - try another USB cable connector
4 - check ur Device manager/usb root hub settings/power setting, uncheck the box that says" alow computer to switch off power....in Power Mgt tab

is the power frequency different out in india, it's not just the voltages you have to watch!

If you can remove the hard drives and use a usb interface to connect them then software like filescavanger will recover files providing the hard spins up ok.

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,

Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.
