Three wires not marked for new Thermostat!

Son-in-law purchase Honeywell T87K thermostat to replace older verticle thermosat. When he removed old unti he forgot to mark wires.Furnace is new gas fired boiler heating radiators.

Tried different wiring methods without success ( usedonly two wires) and then when using all three got boiler to turn on but will not shut off unless he reduces heat by moving dial .

Old wires are wrapped in cloth like material and are Black, White and Brown.

    Well I am confused when you mention "colored" wires as all three are of a color ( casing is Black, White and Tan )so which colored wires go to which connector?

    I like the idea of twisting two wires togehter to see if the boiler kicks on but when that happens does it matter what wire goes to what connector?

    The instructions for the thermosat indicate;

    W = Heat
    R = Power
    Y = Can be used for hot water valve system which I doubt this boiler has.

You will need to go to the heating system and see what color wires are hooked to that. Typically the black and white wires will be used unless they used another color due to a bad wire. Hook the colored wires to the R or RH terminal on the thermostat and the other wire to the W terminal. You can also try taking the wires you have and one by one twisting them together and have a second person inform you when the heating system turns on. Take those two wires and hook them to the terminals I mentioned above.

We have a Honeywell Digital thermosat. We just put brand new batteries in it and it is still showing lo battery.

on most of honeywell units if you pull the face of the thermostat off there is a reset button you can puch and reset try this.... if it does not have a reset remove the red power wire on the "r" terminal and if you have a wire hooked to the "c" terminal remove it at same time ///take batteries out prior to doing this and it will reset the program in thermostat... if the display comes back again with the lo battery the thermostat internally has a issue...good luck

I have a new honeywell thermosat rth2310 and the heat will not go on

Did you just install it????? If not check the batteries and replace them first....check for corroding also....if you just replaced the thermostat did you wire it correctly????/Wire for Wire???? If so if you have 4 wires in your thermostat you require a jumper wire between RH & RC....if you have 5 wires...no jumper is required....is the Furnace power on???

Replace three wire thermostat with four wire thermostat

From the two red and two black wires (and the specs in the pdf), your new thermostat sounds like it's designed to directly control the line voltage (120 or 240) to the heater. That's the usual way baseboard heaters are controlled.

Could your wires be red, black, and (old, yellowed) white, the standard colors in a 3-wire power cable? Just the red and black should be enough to control a 120-volt heater so I don't understand what the white would have been used for. If it were my heater I'd take off the cover(s) -- with the power off, of course -- and find out what those wires actually connect to.

Replacing a thermostat

Typically if you are replacing a heat only thermostat you will have two or three wires. On the old thermostat these wires will be attached to terminals marked "R", "W" and maybe "G". Document what color wires goes to which terminal and transpose these to the new thermostat. If you have a heat and cool thermostat, you will have two or three more wires and connected to terminals labeled "C", "B" and "Y". Again, transpose these wires to the new thermostat as best you can.
