The element will have failed on one side. You will need to get it replaced or looked at.

Could be that the heating element is open and needs to be replaced.

If its a Dualit model then you should be able to get it repaired. Generally replacing parts on a Dualit is not easy but spares are usually available thanks to the fact that its one of the most well known commercial toasters on the market. Google and see if there's a repairer in your area.

your toaster is working correctly if both are off you are in BAGEL/BUN mode ( did i spell that wrong ? ) in that mode it will only toast the cut side .... Rotate the dial all the way one then the other a few times. Maybe something behing it. It this is helpful, please post as such.
