Just buy a name brand universal remote. Make sure it has a menu
button. It will instruct you how to program a code into it for
your TV. Don't lose the instructions. You'll need
them. Good idea is to write the code number on a label and stick
inside the battery compartment. They cost under $10.

The Sony remote that came with your TV will not be able to code to your DVD / VCR combo unit, combo units have to be operated by their original type/style remote, because they operate on very specific frequencies.
Now you may be able to code the combo units remote to operate the TV, but usually not the other way around, it just won't work.
Good luck !
If tv is programmed you should be able to change channels at the tv front control panel. Also, you can buy a univeral remote and program it to your television.
