Ice maker making a grinding noise. I remember a plumber telling me to clean the shut off line in the basement to the ice maker with a long pipe cleaner. Does this sound right?

Thank you for your information you provided, could the noise be described as a clicking or ticking noise? The reason I ask is I have heard for this to be a motor driven harvest and the heating within the ice maker is not engaging to release the ice, so the unit continues to push the ice out causing the gear to jump a tooth. If this is the case the only fix is replacing the ice maker to fix the issue. Other possible cause of grinding is the water in not entering the ice maker (hollow ice cubes) so the water is accumulating around the fan motor and freezing up. As the fan turns on the grinding is the fan motor cutting away at the ice. Gain access to the fan motor and check for ice around the fan, if its there remove that ice. The cause is that the water is not getting into the ice maker and causing this issue. Good Luck, I hope this helps.
I would check your ice maker. You can shut it off by slidding the control on the right hand side of the freezer wall. If the noise quits you need to repair the icemaker. In door ice has had some problem with their icemakers. If that is it they make a kit part #8201515 that will fix it.
The mold heater on the bottom of the ice maker is shot, that is why the cubes will not release. The grinding is the sweep arm trying to push the frozen cubes out.
Are you sure there is still water available to the ice maker?
Having a little air in the line might make the water spit a bit but it should be quickly purged and function again.
Also, lift the stop lever on the ice maker inside the freezer compartment, then let it back down to cycle the ice maker and see if that re-initiates the ice making cycle. You'll know because there will be water in the ice tray. It may take a few minutes to cycle.
It's also possible that when the water was turned off and back on, some debris in the water line made its way to the water valve for the ice maker and plugged it. Some units have a screen that can be cleaned, but make sure the water is off to the fridge before disassembling this line and attempting to clean any debris.
If your fridge has a control board on the back of the unit, un plug the fridge for about two-three minutes and then plug it back in to reset the system.
If you did get it to work again, toss the first two to three sets of ice just in case there was dirt in the line.
hi my name is mark, do you have a water filter on this unit. shut off water to ice maker. remove water line from ice maker, hold water line in a bucket slowly turn on water. if you get water. then the fill solinoid has failed. if you do not get water trace water line back to water shut off. if it is the solinoid valve. you will need model and serial number to order part
Hello Welcome to fixya. I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,
You said, your ice maker is making a buzzing or humming noise ice maker isn't making much ice. . fridge is about 2 1/2 years old.
This sounds like a clogged water line or a electrical short ! I would get service rather than take a chance on electrical fire. Or burn up the circuit in the ice maker.
