De-scaling is normally done through the use of vinegar. I prefer the white vinegar myself. This is simple. Instead of water, place a quart of vinegar in your water tank and no coffee grounds in the basket. Start the cycle. When it is all done, repeat with ordinary clear water, again no grounds in the basket. When this cycle is completed. if yours is a integrated tank, turn the coffee maker up side down to remove all liquid. Refill and enjoy your freshly de-scaled coffee maker.
Presto - de-scaled.
I trust you will find this solution adequate. Thank you for your interest in FixYa.com
the coffe maker might be clogged up so here' what to do:
Look through the clear plastic panel on the side of the coffee maker's water tank to make sure that it has water in it.
Clean your Sunbeam coffee maker, You can wash the removable filter basket and carafe in hot, soapy water and pour 4 cups of white vinegar into the water reservoir of your coffee maker. Start the brewing cycle with no coffee grounds to allow the vinegar to clean the inside of the coffee maker. Rinse away the vinegar by running the brewing cycle twice with only clean, fresh water.

Check the removable filter basket to see if the filter has collapsed if you find coffee grounds in your brewed coffee. If the paper filters collapse often you can wet them before you place them inside the filter basket so that they will stick to the basket and stay in place. or check this link because it might need a new hose. There are 3 common causes of lost perk that can be dealt with at home, and cause about 1/2 of the failures with these urns. They are very common when the pots are used rarely or carelessly cleaned after use, and when coffee is ground too fine for perc (drip grind is too fine for perc). As long as the pot is still heating, check these three things: 1) Clean the _inside_ of the hollow stem )that holds the basket and moves the water from the bottom of the pot to the top), to remove all grounds. You should be able to see clearly through it. 2) At the bottom of this stem there is a very small cup that has little holes in it and fits into the little well at the bottom of the pot. Make sure these are completely clear. 3) Scour out the little well so all residue/ grounds are removed and the little cup fits perfectly into the well.
It is the perfect fit of the two that allows the perc-ing cycle to occur.
If the pot is not heating, or these cleaning measures do not work, a local electric repair shop can probably do the repair for about 1/2 the cost of a new urn.
If it's the thermostat, the water may not be reaching a high enough temperature. I'm not too sure how percolators work, but you could maybe try running another "cycle" to extract more from your ground coffee? Otherwise, try a finer grind to increase the strength of the brew.
Your coffee is too finely ground for your basket. 2 solutions: buy "regular" ground coffee from now on, OR use filters inside the basket. Many 30 cup or 45 cup maker's baskets are sized so that a normal filter, flattened-out, and a small hole torn in the middle will fit into basket and prevent the grounds from passing through.
It sounds like you were using the gold permanent coffee filter in addition to a paper filter. You should use one or the other.
The gold permanent filter must be cleaned between each brewing cycle.
Try this:
1. Remove the filter basket from the coffee machine.
2. Remove the gold permanent coffee filter from the basket.
3. Clean the basket thoroughly. Ensure there are no grounds clogging any holes.
4. Insert a new paper filter only into the basket. Do not use the gold permanent filter for this test.
5. Fill the water reservoir with the desired amount of water.
6. Add the desired amout of coffee grounds into the paper coffee filter.
7. Replace the filter basket into its holder in the coffee machine, and close the water reservoir lid. Press firmly on top where it says, "Press to Close".
8. Ensure the glass carafe is placed correctly in its position on the heating plate.
9. Turn the Function Knob to "BREW", then flip the Power Swich to "ON"
Check the spring under the grounds basket on the pump tube. This is supposed to hold the end of the tube down in the heater well. It should compress when the lid is pushed down on the basket and twisted to lock in under the handles. I have found a good source of parts for Faberware urns and percolators at goodmans.net. The thermostats and heating elements can be easily replaced and the urn returned to original condition. Rich of Colorado
