Probably from the agitator assy. ( assuming you don't have rust probs with your water). I have had mine apart and I know first hand that there is alot of yucky stuff in there. I wiped mine as clean as possible when I fixed it (yes, they also have a tendency to strip out the gear drive from the motor), but I don't know how to get it real clean - pressure washer?

My GE washer is leaving a brown oily residue inside the drum after washes.

I amj thinking that you use soap powder in your washing machine. If that is the case what you are expericing is the accumulated powder residue under the agitator breaking away and marking the clothes. Re move the agitator and clead all the gunk out of the machine including a water recycling(saver ) hoses. Washing powder is 90% clay that is used to carry the active ingredaient and is never completely flushed in the rinse cycle. Ity also cause a deteriation of the hoses and pumpseal. When you have cleaned out the machine I recommend you only use liquid detergents as they are more effective and don't leave the residue.

Hi! We bought our WM2455H washer on February 1/2009 from Best Buy. Suddenly on several washes my clothes become spotted with brown grease. It does not occur at every wash, but what is happening. Please...

Do a tub clean cycle. Hottest water, no clothes, cup of bleach in washer, fill bleach dispenser with bleach, fill softener with bleach. Run once or twice. The 'grease' is actually residue from liquid detergent and/or softener. So stop using liquid detergent and switch to powdered (no residue believe it or not). Use plain white vinegar in place of softener. The acid eliminates the mildew residue and also helps get detergent residue out of your clothes. Good luck.

LG washer - loud noises & brown spots on clothes.

The drum bearing has perished this wild cause the noise and the brown spots on your clothes is probably the grease from the bearing

Leaving brown stains on clothes, messing them up,

If it isn't rust, I suspect cotton can decompose if moist for a long time (in the laundry or machine), causing brown spots. In that case, the spots probably cannot be removed. Or can they?

Clothes coming out spotted

Hi Residue builds up inside of washing machines for all sorts of reasons. Many detergents and fabric softeners can leave filmy layers behind. Hard water can cause spotting on both plastic and metal thus ending up with spots on your washing, how to resolve this follow the instructions, 1, use vinegar a bottle and place your machine on the hottest wash cycle and let it run through a full cycle, when finished use a paper towel with vinegar to clean the inside, set machine on a rinse cycle, this may need to be repeated but will solve it, also use gels and liquids instead of powders and descale etc.

Dark dirty spots on some clothing items appears on every load.

what you are seeing is suds getting back onto the clothes. make sure you are using HE type soap and not using too much of it.
if you are seeing suds inside the unit, when it is running, then it will "re-deposite" dirty soap residues back onto the clothes.
you need to run a rinse and spin cycle or even a heavy duty cycle with hot water to rinse out any soap that is left in the unit.
not a major problem, just use it differently and it will be ok.

Iam getting brown spots on white shorts after washing with Kenmore front loading washing machine

If it's gunk or build up the marks should wash away. In this case run a long cycle using "affresh" or "washer fresh" with an empty load and use the hottest water available to help rinse the gunk out.

If the marks do not wash away, it could be grease due to a bearing failure. Listen for loud growling or grinding either by spinning the drum by hand or putting it into a spin cycle. If this is the case, the rear tub assembly (contains bearing) will need to be replaced. Not much can be done about the ruined clothes :(
