Absolutely screwed up, recently purchased camera

My camera will not focus.  When you try to take a picture an error 1 message comes up.  It won't take pictures in manual focus or auto focus.  I bought the camera on ebay for Christmas without a memory card.  Before I bought a memory card I took the camera out of its box, charged the battery and tried it out.  I was able to take about 5 or 6 pictures.  IT WORKED PERFECTLY!  When I tried to take a seventh picture, everything went wrong, as I have just described above.  I tried putting a memory card in, I tried a lens off my old 35mm, nothing helps.

Hello

Unfortunately a "focus error" message is not something that you will be able to fix. This error indicates a system failure and requires the camera to be sent in for servicing and repair.

You may find it more cost effective to purchase a new camera as opposed to the repair price on your current camera.

Focus error

The zoom and focus operate on screw thread drives. 1 of these has detatched resulting in "ZOOM ERROR" and locked the camera up. Dis-assemble lens and re-attach drive.

Error message now showing

Does the lens extend and retract as normal?
If so then the internal drive gear for the zoom / focus has been damaged and will need to be repaired/ replaced.
If the whole lens will not move or is stuck then it needs to be removed, stripped and re-assembled.

Everything seems fine but won't take a picture, no error message

First of all, you should know that when someone advises you to buy more stuff because of a problem you have, it's very possible they're ripping you off! It's a disgrace that they took advantage of you and sold you all that stuff..

Now, to your problem..

First of all, are you absolutely sure that the camera autofocuses properly? That would be the first thing to check. To make sure, turn the focus selector (on the lens) from auto to manual, try to focus manually (it doesn't matter if it's not 100% accurate) and press the button.

If that's not the case, try other modes. Try the camera in (M)anual mode, for instance. Also, just in case, try to clean (with a dry fabric) the battery contacts and also the battery contacts of the camera.

No picture taken when shutter release is pressed

if you see no reation of the pressing of the button i.e. no focusing, no error message nothing , then most probably a simplest problem , the shutter release button may not be working for few reasons : 1) defective switch. 2) defective flex cable. 3) camera exposed to some physical jerk or dropping resulting into disalingment between inner switch and the shutter release button.
