I need to transfer some files from it (Win98SE) to new hard drive (WinXP Pro). I asked earlier and someone kindly answered and sent a picture that implied if I set the jumper shunt on pins #3 and #4 of the 10 pin jumper block that'd set it in the needed slave mode. Well, first I only have pin #4-no #3. I tried that and it booted up in Win 98. Same w #1 & #2, #5 & #6, as well as not installing the shunt on any pins. Puting the shunt on pins #7 & #8 as well as #9 and #10 (where it was on old computer) it does boot up as Win XP Pro but it does not show the old hard drive at all under ''my computer''. Any help? How do I set the old drive to slave? Thanks p.s. On the old drive's label it says: ''Jumper J50'' and ''Master/Single On'', and ''Slave Off''. I read the answer to another question similkar to mine. Can I connect the old hard drive to new computer's power and using old computer 40 pin IDE ribbon connect old hard drive to the secondary IDE port on new computer (where my floppy drive is connected currently)? Taking off the jumper...and not doing anything with the new hard drive? Thanks.

Jumper off will set the drive to slave. If you can connect both drives to the same ribbon cable with the master on the end & the slave to the second connector. Look at your bios as win is booting up to see if shows the drive as slave, you will not be able to copy windows as a operating system off of the drive, but should be able to copy files.

Good luck on your endevors.

I want to add another hard drive and need to know how to set the jumpers on my maxtor 90645d3 please help.ty

if you want to boot from this drive, please set the jumper to the master position.

if this drive is for additional storage, please set the jumper to slave. and make sure 1st hard drive is set to master.

if this is the only drive in the system, please set the jumper to single or remove the jumper.

there will be a chart telling you which pins are for which setting in the jumper area, which is between the data plug and the power plug on the back of your HDD.

main thing that will cause drives to not work is 2 jumpers on the same cable and they both are set to the same thng.. i.e. master/master or slave/slave. also, if one is set to single drive it will likely bypass the slave drive.

Maxtor file transfer problems

well..it's possibly the case that the maxtor is looking for mp3 files that are compressed using a different algorithm than what you are sending to it. can you open an mp3 file, and look at the properties, then compare that to your mp3 file specs for your maxtor

Can I put stuff from a comp. w/ a virus onto a maxtor hard drive

Yes, naturally it depends on the virus, what kind it is and where it is stored. Most of the time you can safely transfer files to another hard drive worry free. I would not use a program such as "Ghost" that copies all your system's drivers over. Only save necessary files, format your old hard drive and re-load everything.

Hope this helps,

Thanks

I have an older Maxtor hard drive Model 90645D3. How do I put it in slave mode so that I can transfer files to my newer XP's hard drive? Thanks, Rad I think I have the rest of the process figured out.

Hello

At the back of the drive, you should be able to see the jumper setting. There must be a small jumper in as well. Have a look at the pic, and just set it to slave and you should be set.

I have a maxtor 90645d3 i need to make it my master drive...can u tell me the jumper settings plz

On the back of the drive you should see 3 groups of 2 pins. One probably already has the plastic jumper on it. They should be marked: m s cs. The m mis the master setting. s is slave & cs is cable select. Place the jumper onto the group of pins marked m & your drive is now set to master. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
