Sounds like the start switch is faulty.
Try replacing the start switch, this may solve your problem.

I will include these two websites for parts and further help:
http://www.partselect.com/
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/index.aspx
Both also have chat assistance 24/7.
Good Luck,
Hope this helps

GE dryer starts but..... stops

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.

Start button starts dryer and dryer stops when button is released.

Ge dryers have a belt sensing switch inside that won't let the dryer run (just as you describe) when the belt breaks or comes off. My guess is you broke a belt. With door open---hold in button door switch and hit the start switch to get it too run a few seconds. Watch the drum and see if it turns. My guess it will not. Belt is a long skinny band that goes all around the drum outer area and then down around the motor.

When I the start the GE dryer it will not start unless I will Hold it to On position. when I release it it will stop.in other words it will not hold to Run position

you could have a bad motor. the motor has an internal switch that is stuck in the start position and not switching to run. replace the motor.

Not sure of model but dryer does not stay running when switch is released. As long as you hold switch on it runs and when you release it shuts off. Suggestions?

Check the belt is not broken . If the drum turns when you start it then either the belt switch is bad or the motor switch is not working because it is bad or the motor may be full of lint.
