Physically the lamp looks new, it lights fine for around 15 seconds, the fans sound good but then the lamp goes out and the lamp/temp light turns red.

Check the heat sensor fitted with the lamp assembly. If this sensor does not work properly, or its control circuit has some trouble with it, it will always give a high temperature signal to main system control, will finally shut it down. OK.
It is bad. They don't always explode when they fail.
Projection makers charge an arm and a leg for their replacement
lamps. They make it easy to do but as a result the custom lamp
assy is expensive. The trick is to just buy the bulb for your
model from any number of us aftermarket sources at a fraction of the
lamp price and install it in the old lamp yourself.
