Question about Danby Silhouette DWC512BL Wine Cooler
We bought our house with a danby silhouette wine cooler installed in our kitchen. About 50% of the time it makes a very loud humming noise and then finally quiets down for a few minutes before it starts up again. We don't have a users manual and have been unable to diagnose or fix the problem. Any ideas? Thanks, Heather
The problem is likely with one of the two fans. A new fan is available from Danby (1-800-263-2629). My noisy fan is the condensor fan located at the bottom rear of the device. After removing the cooler from under the cabinet, the source of the noise was obvious. You will need to tell them whether it is the upper fan or lower fan. Leave the cooler upright for a few hours before you plug it in so that you do not damage the condenser. Price for the fan from Danby is $20.15 including shipping. Users Manual is available at http://www.danby.com/manuals/DWC512BL.pdf -Ron

I wrote up a blog entry for a minor modification we made to our Danby wine refrigerator to silence noise from the upper fan:
You can find quieter versions of the fan with the same specs at big computer parts stores (for the PC builders who want quiet computers). The one we got cost less than $20. We also added rubber spacers so that the fan vibration isn't amplified by back panel of the fridge (which otherwise acts like a soundboard). Made a huge difference.
Even with the fix, though, I wouldn't ever recommend the Danby models. Their noisy, and we've had multiple breakdowns in five years. The only authorized repair shop in our area has lousy customer service and high prices.
