There's quite a simple fix to this.
Disconnect the camera and turn it on. Press Menu and move to the the little 'tool icon' tab. Under 'USB connection', change the setting from PC to Pictbridge. Press OK. Connect your Optio to your PC and that should work.
Nicklaus87 YOU ROCK!!!! thanks so much for your insight into this matter i was afraid i was going to have to buy another camera.this was an easy fix!! thanks again!!!
RALLY THANK YOU nicklaus87 IT WORKS !!!!! How I appreciate to find your solution. Thank you very much.
You can also just download the drivers, expand the download (defaults to c:\usbsw25). When vista asks for a disk say you don't have it but tell it you want to locate the file. Browse to C:\usbsw25\program files\PENTAX\PENTAX USB DISK Device\Windows2KXP. The driver installs and works fine.
Nicklaus87 - THANKYOU!!!!!
Nicklaus87- thank you so much!!! It was such a frustrating problem and now it's solved. you are awesome.
Nicklaus87, you saved me day. thanks for the solution
Nicklaus87 you are right. It works now. Thanks a lot!
I tried downloading the drivers from the pentax site and they didn't work. However when I installed the drivers directly from the CD it worked fine!
1 - Plug in camera
2 - Let wizard search for software
3 - It asks if you have a CD, and if so, put it in.
4 - The wizard successfully installs drivers off the CD (even though the CD says it only supports through XP)
Hopefully you still have a CD, if not, I don't know what to do!

Hold the OK key for 5 seconds while powering on the camera. this unlocks the menu and key modes.
SOURCE: can a pentax optio S5i support a 8GB memory card
No the Pentax Optio S5i does not support an 8gb memory card.
8gb would be an SDHD card, the S5i came out before SDHD so it does not support them.
Standard Secure Digital Cards come up to 4GB in size so you could use one of these. The highest standard card I have is 2gb and that is fine in mine.
My S5i locks up if you put an SDHD card in.
The only firmware update that Pentax supply does not effect this, SDHD needs different hardware.

You might want to consider NOT connecting your camera to the computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.

As per the other person I too have the same problem. When I plug in my cord from the camera (Pentax Optio S5i) to my new laptop with Windows Vista I get a message saying it can't locate Pentax driver and this isn't supported by Pentax??? or similar. My camera is not that old. Is there any way I can get my camera to work with Vista? I can't even get it to recognize the camera when plugging it into the USB port .
Same thing...any help?
pentax drvers will not work in vista
the same!!!!
Yes, same problem, are there any new or other USB drivers that works with Vista that we can use?
Hi - I don't know where to post a solution to this problem. I was the one who posted at the beginning that I couldn't get my laptop (with Vista) to recognize my Pentax camera. I plugged it in with the cord to the USB port and it couldn't/wouldn't load the correct driver. I think the matter would have been solved if I had my software disc but I couldn't find it at the time. That is hopefully one solution. The solution I found was a simple inexpensive fix -- I just bought a "card reader" and it works great. It was under $20 and you plug it in to the USB port, then put the camera memory card right into it and it instantly recognized and copied my pictures to my computer! TA DA! Good luck to all!
I love the internet, and more specifically, helpful people taking the time to help others!!! I just discovered the same problem and did a quick google, ending up on this site and the easy solution. Thanks so much!!
