DVD Writer not recognizing DVD

If it is just a writer then no but I have never heard of just a writer and mostly they are designated a reader/writer when they should be able to read whatever they are capable of writing - if the computer has the right software installed that is.

It could be you need to instal a suitable media player or dvd player software.

if your cd or dvd writer is not playing movies then this is a problem of your cd/dvd writer's lens.you can repair your cd/dvd writer and then you acn see any movie on your system.

When you formated you erased the driver you need to use your dvd writer as a dvd writer and player. If your dvd-rom came with a cd use it to reinstall the driver and program it uses. Otherwise you can search for your driver thru the manufacturer website or go to www.driversguide.com and find it there.

On the back of a CD-writer or a DVD-writer is a small grid (2 rows) of gold pins.

Each vertical set of pins is labelled: MA(ster), SL(ave), and C(able)S(elect).
Be sure that one drive has a small jumper between the MA pins,
and the other drive has a small jumper between the SL pins.

Was there any software on CD-ROM that came with the DVD-writer,
e.g., software to play DVDs, and software to write CDs and DVDs?
To "play" a DVD, you'll need that software.
To "play" a music CD, Windows Media Player will suffice.

This may be a device driver problem.
uninstall then re-install your CD/DVD Writing Program. i,e Nero-Roxio et,c. it has to have The ATAPI device driver installed to function Correctly.

Assuming you have a DVD writer installed and functioning in your computer, check the format of your dvds. If you have a writer that uses dvd-rw it may not recognize dvd+r discs. Your label on the dvd package should have the disc format and your documentation for the writer should say what formats will work in the writer.

the wire connecting the dvd writer to motherboard should be perfect.....if there is a loose connection.....then such kind of problems will arise.....i suggest you to remove the wire and clean the wire and insert it....you will get the difference.....try this it will work 100%....i am a software engineer and i have experience in these areas....thats why suggesting you this idea...
