I can't get my Memorex dvd writer to play a DVD, is there something I need to do to start it?

If it is just a writer then no but I have never heard of just a writer and mostly they are designated a reader/writer when they should be able to read whatever they are capable of writing - if the computer has the right software installed that is.

It could be you need to instal a suitable media player or dvd player software.

The DVD has burned incorrectly and the data has likely corrupted somewhat to the point where the DVD player/writer can't read it. You may be able to watch it on your computer with a DVD drive. Try saving it to your computer, then erasing the disc and trying to record something short to it and play it back - if it plays back, it's likely to have been a recording problem, however, if you get the same problem, it may be a dodgy disc, a faulty DVD player/writer, or a format problem. Try this, in order left to right. Copy DVD to PC -> Erase DVD -> Record on DVD from TV -> Play back If plays back Erase DVD -> Continue as normal If not Buy DVD-RW (emphasis on the minus) -> Try using that If that works continue as normal, otherwise... Return the DVD player/writer under warranty for repair/replacement.

Yes the drive runs on usb .I did not use there install software .I used VLC player (free ware) because im using windows 8.1. hope this helps.

Try Magic ISO and open the drive and write it

Convert the CD or DVD Image into hard disk it will work surely

sometimes it depends on what kind of dvd-r you buy because they have DVD+R DVD-R DVD-DL ect it might also depend on the brand of the dvd-r most of the time the more exspencive ones work better Like sony or memorex

Please go and buy a new dvd writer in place of dvd-rom.

Check you have a DVD writer in the computer. Perhaps it is only a CD writer?

If you have posted the correct model of writer, then it only supports the writing of DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but CD-R and CD-RW disc writing are supported, and it should play all forms of DVD, so it won't burn DVD-R and RW discs, but if it wont play all types then try a cd/dvd cleaner, but to be honest when writers start playing up the lens is normally faulting and a replacement drive will be required.
