Eureka 2971AV EZ Kleen Bagless Upright Vacuum Logo
Posted on Dec 17, 2007

Smell/suction I have a Eureka Altima Model 2991 Type AVZ. I have suction when I use the power paw and attachments. I have all hoses clear. My brush is spinning and belt is not broken (I opened it up and checked), but I have no suction when I turn it on to vacuum my living room carpet. I also have a burning smell to go with it after about 30 seconds. I've never had a problem with this vacuum cleaner before.

Our Eureka Altima stopped working. We checked the belt,
which we had recently replaced and it is fine. The rollerbrush
won't turn and there is a burning smell and smoke (which prompted me to
open it up in the first place). Do we need to replace the
rollerbrush? Any ideas? We haven't had this vacuum for even
a year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Ours started smelling too, and it seems that the plastic end on the roller brush was melting. In process of finding rollerbrush for it now

The brushroll may spin when looking at it but stops when pressure of the floor is applied. The belts stretch, so they look fine but are not. The smell - if it's a rubber smell - would also be the belt. Some, or most, brushrolls can get hair in the ends that could also cause a smell and belt problem.

SOURCE: Burning smell/lost suction

Is the brush roll turning while on the carpet. If the belt is old, then it has stretched and will slip causing a rubber smell. But if it is an electrical smell, then your motor is failing and will need to be replaced.

The vacuum doesn't have an suction power to pick up anything from the carpet?

Make sure the bag is empty, then remove the bottom plate from the brush head--look for a debris jam near the rear end of the brush compartment. Remove the bag and look below where it attaches to the base for a similar debris jam. A stiff thin wire (coat hanger) with a small hook bent into the end is handy for clearing the debris out. Take the machine outside and turn it on once--if you were successful, the air will rush through it again (and blow a wad of junk into the air). Hope this helps!

My eureka vacuum won't suction and starts to smoke when I try to use it. It sounds like it is suctioning when I first turn it on, but after about 20 seconds it begins to smell like burning and does not...

The problem is that your belt is stretched and worn. This causes that burning smell and it also causes the vacuum to not pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here is the belt you need and the manual with instructions:

The power paw on my vacuum machine is not working.Eureka ez kleen

The filter is not the reason it's not working. Take out screws and open Power Paw, remove fur from the roller brush on the right side, there is a small gap where fur winds around tightly, cut off with scissors or pull out with a small toothpick.

Eureka 2971 vacuum

The duster on this unit is just that a duster the holder for it is to vacuum it off when your not using it it doesn't have anything to do with the vacuum cleaner really. As for the power pawl it is a air driven upholstery nozzle the suction air passes through a turbine which in turn spins the brush agitating whatever it is your cleaning ie. sofa, steps. Simply attach it to the end of the hose and your off just be sure to try and clean any hair or debris for the unit it will not work if the air flow is cut off. Eureka Altima Vacuum Cleaner w/Power Paw

The way I resolved the problem was to remove the cover at the end of the power paw. Then remove the so side black covers for the shaft. Remove any debris and hair and then put back together. This solved my problem.
