I connected my MacBook Air to the old Apple Display 17" LCD monitor (the clear crystal): from mini-port to DVI also from DVI to ADC. However, it simply wouldn't power up the 17 inch display. The button on the lower corner of the display also does not respond.
Seems somebody has posted a similar problem. Has any solution been posted yet? Thank you.

Do you have the black unibody Macbook Pro that was just released, or the silver model?
Since the display is DVI, it will directly hook up to the silver model.
If you have the new model, you need a mini DVI to DVI adapter.

If you own just a Macbook this is what you need http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8661LL/B#overview
If you own a Macbook Pro

Make sure you do the full research on these things, so that you don't spend money on the wrong thing, adapter and connectors can be somewhat confusing.
SOURCE: 22" Apple Cinema Display doesn't power on
This may be an issue with the display detecting the wrong video format or is using an unsupported resolution for this Apple Cinema Display 22"
Procedure:
• Make sure your Mac is turned off.
• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the start up sound for the third time.
• Release the keys and allow the Mac to start up.
If that does not help here is additional support reference from Apple regarding its LCD displays:
