3 red lights! I had this problem in Dec and got it fixed ok.Its now gone again.Can it be fixed or do i need to buy a new Xbox??

If you purchased it new from a trustworthy retailer just 3 months ago, and are already getting red-ringed, then send it into Microsoft ASAP. The warranty should still be good on it if it was indeed purchased new, and they will fix it or send you a new Xbox depending on the status of the problem. If it's purchased used or from a 3rd party-then you are out of luck and need to get a repair kit, take it to a professional for repair, or get a new Xbox. Usually with the older versions, not getting enough ventilation is due to the fan being placed too close to the motherboard, and the board overheats because not enough air can be drawn through. Get it exchanged if possible.

ok this is a problem with the av cord try a new one or unplug and retry there is a good chance that will help but if not the solder came off one of the two chips for the video or in extream cases in overheating it was the one by the gpu if this did not help your best bet is to buy a new av cord if that dont work return the cord and call microsoft for a repair 1-800-4my-xbox if you want to self fix look on youtube for an easy guide to follow its simple fix if you know what to do

Hi you have got the dreaded red ring of death, this is very common with all xboxes and their are people out their that will fix them for you for a fee.

their is nothing you can do yourself to solve this problem as its a case of taking the xbox apart and removing the heat sinks and the x clamps and fitting new parts and new heat sink paste, this is a big job and requires special tools. so its not for the novice to do.

i do the repairs to these on a regular basis and 8 out of 10 i fix work again but others tend to be to far gone.

any way the reason you are getting this warning light is due to it over heating, check the date on the sticker on the back of the xbox as it is covered by warranty for 3 years for this exact fault so if its less than 3 years old go to the xbox website and get them to replace it for you, if its outside this time then you have 2 options you could either repair it or sell it.

you can buy repair kits and get the instructions off the net but without having done it before it can by really hard to do and you could do more harm than good.

when they built these they used cheap parts and cheap heat sink paste now over time this causes it to over heat and then you get the dreaded red ring of death and this shows you the either the gpu or cpu chip has over heated.

now the repair involves taking the xbox apart which is not easy but can be done you need to then remove the x clamps and then remove both heat sinks. once their removed you need to clean them up and remove all the old heat sink paste and use new paste, you also need to get xbox rrod repair kit as you wont be using the cheap x clamp bits anymore these will go in the bin as this is what caused the problem in the first place.

3 red lights is the gpu and the cpu overheating if you stop the heat build up getting to the chips it will work for you you can do this at home or you can use a good guide to fix this error.

Often this error is indicative of a problem with your ethernet port. It's been reported that shutting-down, unplugging console, removing the hard drive, power console on, then off again, re-attaching hard drive, and powering-on again will remedy the problem. This doesn't always fix the problem. Alot of times the 360 has to be repaired by Microsoft to be rid of this particular problem. That will cost you $150 and 6-8 weeks of down-time. For $50 dollars more you can buy a new arcade system and swap your hard drive into the new one.

the red light usually means that the lazer has gone.
i suggest buying a new lazer off ebay as the easy option..

there is another 'almost' soloution my dad called it tweaking the lazer.
this involved opening the xbox up and fiddling with a tiny screw on the lazer, but be warned if you do this, it wont 'fix' the problem so you will propably need to do it again one day. on the plus side tho it will bring it back to life for a while without costing you a penny.
try searching for this on google or youtube and get the guide..

1. Turn off the console, unplug all the cables (including the power cable), and reconnect them again. Turn the Xbox on again.
2. Next to try is turning the console off again, and taking out the XBox hard drive. If after turning on the console again the three red lights are gone, turn it off and put the hard drive back in again.
3. Ensure that the light on the power supply is green even when the console has the three red lights.

your 360 is a first run off assembly. they were junk from the start. my warranty expired also but called microsoft and they said if the ring of death is related to the first run of 360s they willextend the warranty. exactly what happened to me. 8 days later they sent me a brand new 360 cause problems with the first run 360s can't be properly fixed. contact them tell them the problem and you will get a new one. hope this helps Tadster

i think you need to take it back, but if you get it back together get rid of all the data you dont need from your xbox it works. and the rings go away.

YOU DON T NEED TO BUY A NEW ONE. CALL THE XBOX 360 SUPPORT NUMBER LOCATED IN THE BACK OF THE XBOX OR YOU CAN GOOGLE THE SUPPORT NUMBER FOR XBOX.

INFORMED THEM THAT YOU HAVE DONE EVERYTHING AND YOUR XBOX IS NOT WORKING AND YOU HAVE THE RED LIGHT.

THEY WILL REPLACE YOUR XBOX OR FIX IT FOR FREE.
