There's really nothing to setup, you just mark waypoints and it displays them on the map. If you press enter on any screen, it will give you options for that screen.

SOURCE: Garmin GPSmap 60CSx and geocaches

Search for them "by name" instead of "by nearest"

Find>waypoints>find>menu>enter>by name

Only the nearest 50 caches show up and then only if they are within 50 miles.

The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.

The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version.

SOURCE: I geocache with a friend.

Depends on the number of satellites each GPS is viewing at the time so if you are holding the device your body will be shielding a number of satellites from the device and this may be different depending which direction you are looking in. The other thing is that 10m/40ft is about the best accuracy you can get from a standard GPS. If you want better accuracy you need a surveying GPS with a Differential GPS receiver

SOURCE: the coordinates that I get are 30 metres off from the other GPS units that we geocache with. My settings must be off.

Yes, have you enabled WAAS on your 60CSx? WAAS is an acronym for Wide Area Augmentation System, according to the instruction manual an FAA funded service to improve overall integrity of the GPS signal through North America.

If you are in an area which is not serviced by ground stations, having WAAS enabled may degrade the signal from the GPS satellites. Try enabling or disabling this feature.

To do so, acess the System Startup Page. On the Setup Menu page, highlight the System icon and press Enter. WAAS is the second available setting on this page.

Make sure your batteries are fresh; I prefer alkalines in this model. Set the battery type in the System Setup Page, same page as noted for WAAS above.

Another thought is to be sure you have the latest Garmin software installed. Visit their site to download the latest and greatest, free, of course.

I have a Garmin 250 Nuvi. I would like to do some

No this is a road navigation only unit. For a cheap entry level GPS that you can use for Geocaching, take a look at the Garmin eTrex series. For a top of the line, consider a GPS60csx or the new Oregon series from Garmin.

Problems with Garmin set up

Firstly, have you downloaded the locations of caches to your Vista HCx, either from the garmin website or from Geocaching.com? which are the sites that I would recommend.

If you haven't done so, then you have to do that before you can be guided to the caches. On those websites it asks for the location from where you want to look for caches, then lists suitable caches which you can download to your unit, by connecting the USB cable that was provided with it.

Once you have done this, using the find geocache function will bring up a list of the caches that you have downloaded, listed by their geocaching ID. You can, by pressing the menu buttom on the left hand side, select the option to have the caches listed in order of how close to your location they are. To find a little more detail, select the cache with the rocker switch, and press the switch down, which brings up a screen with a bit more detail of the cache.

Hope this helps.

Won't give me the correct location

you should search for mapdate (kaartdatum in dutch) and select WGS84, it's a preference all geocachers use
