Problems with Garmin set up

Recently bought a garmin etrex hcx gps-mainly to go geocaching. when i ask it to find geocache, it asks if i want to set up geocache, but when reply yes, all i can do is change the icon for find and found, and change if i want the entry logged into the calendar. the only button I can use to get out is the quit button above the light button on the right hand side as you look at it. then if i go back to the "find" screen it asks me again if I want to set up geocache. What am I doing wrong and can you help.

Firstly, have you downloaded the locations of caches to your Vista HCx, either from the garmin website or from Geocaching.com? which are the sites that I would recommend.

If you haven't done so, then you have to do that before you can be guided to the caches. On those websites it asks for the location from where you want to look for caches, then lists suitable caches which you can download to your unit, by connecting the USB cable that was provided with it.

Once you have done this, using the find geocache function will bring up a list of the caches that you have downloaded, listed by their geocaching ID. You can, by pressing the menu buttom on the left hand side, select the option to have the caches listed in order of how close to your location they are. To find a little more detail, select the cache with the rocker switch, and press the switch down, which brings up a screen with a bit more detail of the cache.

Hope this helps.

I have a Garmin etrex legend, and when I enter the Lat and Long for geocaching on either the lat and long, I cannot enter the numbers 5 thru 9 into it. An example is, I can enter N 39-7.178. The blank...

Go to Main Menu > Setup > Units > Position Format > change to hddd.ddddd format. This is the decimal format which is widely used by geocaching forums.

Need outer rubber cover and tape inner seal

Contact Garmin for "Bumper Replacement" and tape. Also review forums at Geocaching.com. Many solutions listed there. I have not done it yet. Getting ready to.

I have a Garmin 250 Nuvi. I would like to do some

No this is a road navigation only unit. For a cheap entry level GPS that you can use for Geocaching, take a look at the Garmin eTrex series. For a top of the line, consider a GPS60csx or the new Oregon series from Garmin.

My etrex legend develops a verticle black line during use and then shuts off. removing and replacing the batteries gets the gps restarted but then the problem repeats

Mine also was doing this while geocaching. I downloaded and installed the newest firmware(v3.90) using the WebUpdater from the Garmin site and it fixed the issue for me.

The coordinates that I get are 30 metres off from the other GPS units that we geocache with. My settings must be off.

Yes, have you enabled WAAS on your 60CSx? WAAS is an acronym for Wide Area Augmentation System, according to the instruction manual an FAA funded service to improve overall integrity of the GPS signal through North America.

If you are in an area which is not serviced by ground stations, having WAAS enabled may degrade the signal from the GPS satellites. Try enabling or disabling this feature.

To do so, acess the System Startup Page. On the Setup Menu page, highlight the System icon and press Enter. WAAS is the second available setting on this page.

Make sure your batteries are fresh; I prefer alkalines in this model. Set the battery type in the System Setup Page, same page as noted for WAAS above.

Another thought is to be sure you have the latest Garmin software installed. Visit their site to download the latest and greatest, free, of course.

Geocaching with Garmin Etrex Legend CX

The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.

The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version.

you should search for mapdate (kaartdatum in dutch) and select WGS84, it's a preference all geocachers use
