Hello there

You will want to perform a factory restore.

While booting up the laptop, as soon as you turn it on, keep tapping the F11 key until it launches the restore process.

If it doesn't, repeat the above but try the F12 key instead.

As it depends on the specific model, you may just have to keep on trying one of the following keys if the above don't work:

  • F10
  • Alt + F10
If you still can't enter the restore mode, did the laptop come with any restore CD's? Please let me know.

Hi

Copy all files to disc or flash drive you want to maintain. The following steps will completely erase all information from your Hard Drive. Once this information is erased you will be unable to retrieve it. Purchase or download a secure file and disk deletion program. These programs are available for purchase or can be found for free on the Internet by searching “secure file deletion” or similar topic. Install and use the program according to the instructions. Bring the computer to a professional and have them wipe your Hard Drive. If you are unsure you will be able to wipe all the information off your Hard Drive yourself bring it to a professional and have them perform this task for you. Verify your Hard Drive has been wiped clean. Attempt to access personal information previously stored on your computer. If it is still accessible your Hard Drive was not wiped clean, and the process needs to be repeated. Remove your Hard Drive if your computer is not in working condition. Some buyers, recycling centers and organizations will accept nonworking computers and will repair them. However, this condition may prevent you from wiping the drive. In this case the drive needs to be removed, installed in another computer and wiped clean or removed and stored safely in your home. Do not throw the drive out!

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

P8z77-v LK SATA Controller Problem ??

The board was working fine until you did what you did. HD is all messed up software wise. Wipe it completely and do a clean reinstall of your OS. And stay away from updates ,etc. The only time you resort to them is when you have an issue. Otherwise, you very often turn a good working piece of gear into a paper weight or junk.
And 8 is the worst OS down the pike - Use 7 and drivers for win 7.

As soon as turn computer on it says operating system not found -- i can get it to go to one other thing and it ask for HDD user password which i have no earthly idea what it can be

1. i hope you have backed up of all your data from the HDD.
2. format the HDD and reload the OS - but this time, make sure that you have atleast 2 partitions.
3. keep all your important in the second (non-system) partition.
4.after you have reloaded the OS, please get a good anti-virus and anti-spyware application and scan your computer regularly with them.

Replacement harddrive into acer pc

No matter what you do, you need to partiton and format the drive and install an OS, be it with the Acer recovery disks or with an original XP install disk. You will need to boot from your CD drive to install the OS, if your drive is not bootable you will need to boot from a floppy and load drivers for the CD drive. For information on how to get these boot floppies check out this Microsoft link:

Reboot whole computer

Why do you want to restore your computer to its original state? Did you get infected with a virus, or malware , or a rootkit that you believe has compromised the integrity of your system?
If you revert back to the condition your system was in in 2004, you will have to spend hours if not days online downloading years of updates to your os, updating drivers, and reinstalling all your applications and programs, not to mention backing up and re-organizing all your documents and folders.
Please consult the Gateway site about what this operation will do to your system by reading their FAQ on recovery by clicking here
If you do need to reformat and reinstall, there are other ways to do this that might prove easier in the long run, like making an XP sp3 slipstream installation CD.
On the other hand, if you are simply experiencing a slow down of your system and find your applications unresponsive, there are other means of correcting your present configuration that might work instead of doing a recovery install.
Please have a look at this article, including the links at the end.
It may help you to make up your mind...
If you do go with the reformat, even in the wake of a virus, please make backups of your system and documents. There's stuff you might find you need later on....

Erase all memory

There may be a restore partition on the harddrive (you'll have to determine if there is), if so you can use the data on that partition to restore the PC to it's original configuration. Otherwise an Operating System disk would be the best way to format the harddrive and do a clean install.
