Your screen has gone bad. the LCD display has it's own IC chips that receive data from the main board and convert it to a visual readout. If you dropped it, there's a possibility that the internal flex cable has partially come loose from the board. However, you can't tell that unless the Nuvi is opened up. You should send it in for repair.

Try this: Hold the power buuton down, you will see on the lower screen the word "Pre Booting - ". Keep holding the power button for about 60 second, then you will see on the lower screen "Booting".
This time, release power button; system will reboot and loading map... again.
I got the same problem, after research on the web. Nick 99990_0 had post this solution on (his Nuvi 660) but it work for my Nuvi 350 too. Good luck.

The problem with repairing it yourself is that this is a surface mount connector. The solder pads are so small, it would be very difficult to solder with a standard soldering iron. Most likely you would apply too much solder and short out the connector. You really need to use a surface mount soldering/desoldering device and that can be fairly expensive. I have done this before but I have access to the right equipment.
Also, there is a possiblility that the printed circuit board tracks have been pulled up off the main board. If that has happened, there's a lot more work involved in fixing that. You might have to put in a different type of power jack and run wires from it to the main board.
If you're going to try to salvage the USB connector, I would remove it completely and install a new one. Over time, these connectors wear out, so you're better off removing the old one and putting a new one in. Again, this all depends upon whether the tracks on the board have been damaged or not.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.
Good Luck,
- Jim
You also have to know how to take apart the Nuvi.

Your nuvi 5000 does NOT have a internal battery and that means that you cannot operate it unless it is connected to a 12 volt power source. Connecting it to your computer via USB allows you to install map updates, check for firmware updates, etc, but you will not be able to use it as a gps while it is connected to the computer. There is nothing wrong with your gps.
To use your gps in the home you need to purchase a 12 volt adapter, there are several types, plug the adapter into your wall outlet and connect your gps to it. If you can sit near a window it will help in picking up the satellite signal. Just keep in mind that you cannot connect the 12 volt power supply and use the usb cable at the same time. Enjoy your gps.

I spoke to Garmin Support about this issue. There are 2 settings for contrast on the nuvi 1300. You need to set the contrast while it is plugged into the vehicle, and also while it is unplugged from the vehicle. The reason for the 2 settings is to save the charge of the battery while it is not plugged into the vehicle or power source.

I had the same problem. When you have your nuvi plugged into your cigarette lighter it doesn't charge. Your battery is probaly near dead. I called Garmin and they told me to plug it into my computer via the usb cable. Turn the Garmin off and let it charge for several hours. That did the trick
