It sounds like your port that your using is bad. If it's a ps/2 port, you may want to get a ps/2 to usb adapter and try it that way. If it's a usb port, try another port. I've not seen to many usb ports going bad, but you never know.
there have been alot of problems in the past with vista not all external components are compatible with this program.i had the same problem with vista so i got rid of vista and started using windows xp home edition since then i have never had a problem with it not recognising any device i have added to my computer.i hope this helps.
Go to the HP support for this PC at http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html and search for your laptop. Here you can download the USB drivers or any updated drivers that you may need. If still no dice, then uninstall the USB driver, restart and try loading it again from the download.
dude usb 2.0 was released way back... i believe the necessary drivers have not been installed... you better go to device manager and try updating the drivers... it would have option to check online... post here if u need more help...
