If radio has save button then tune your station push save button then push a number on preset you want it saved to. The radio automatticlly stores the strongest station in your area.
Select the AM or FM wave band. Tune the radio to a station then press and hold down the 1 or 2 or 3 pre tune station button until it beeps. Then this radio station is then set to which pre tune button you have selected. Repeat to set the buttons for other radio stations.
Check all fittings, plugs and fuses. Further problem exits, it seems to bad pre-amp. Its better to replace the pre-amp. If necessary you can get aftermarket radio at wholesale price at http://www.autopartspoint.com/products/cd-radios.html

Well there's lots of possible reasons. The FM receiver portion of the radio is separate from the AM Band receiver, pre-amp, and amplifier sections of the radio. The FM receiver may have simply failed, as well as the CD player portion of the radio. Your car FM needs repair, you need a multimeter to check it or take it to a repair person. For clock turn key on and stereo off. Press and hold the function button for 3-5 seconds. the clock should appear with the hours flashing. Use the up-down buttons to set hours. Push the right button to set the minutes. Now turn on the stereo with the source (or power) button and your done!
Remember key on stereo off. hold function, the rest will become second nature once you've done it a few times.
Tuner pre-sets are super easy. Tune to the station you want and then just hold the # button (1-6) that you want that station on for about 3 seconds. The channel your on, (e.i 104.9) will flash a couple of times and then stop flashing. When it stops flashing it's in the memory. Tune your next channel and hold # 2,3,4,5,6, If 6 isn't enough push BAND and your on FM-2 with 6 more pre-sets, Push it again for FM-3 with 6 more presets. Push it a 3rd time for the AM band with 6 pre-sets and one more time to get back to FM-1.
the problem with the static is that radio station you have it set to is picking up a signal on FM. it could be a dead channel in one location and it could be a live station a town or so away. try another pre set station. i tend to use 89.1 it is a dead channel in many areas around me. it could be a live station near you.
Your Sony is equiped for 5 AM presets and 15 FM presets.
1. Power your unit "ON".
2. Set the desired band - AM or FM.
3. Hold the "Mode" button down no more than one second. The "preset" indication just be gone.
4. Manually tune in the desired station you want to preset.
5. Hold "Enter" until preset indication re-appears. The number of the preset should be blinking.
6. Using the tuning buttons, change the the number to your desired "preset" number.
7. Push the "Enter" button to set the preset.
Remember, you can't have more than 5 AM presets (a mistake I made).
