If the left needle is closer to you than the right, you probably need a new needle clamp. Remove the needle plate and set the tip of the lower looper behind each needle and check to see if one needle is closer to the looper than the other one. If it is, have an authorized dealer replace the needle clamp. If they say you have to have a new needle bar also, that may well be true since a newer version of the needle clamp requires an updated needle bar.
From my past sewing experience (not an industrial machine), the thread will shred if the needle/thread/fabric are incompatible. Could be the canvas is too coarse and is wearing on the thread like sandpaper. Remember, the thread/needle will penetrate over 10 times before that section of thread actually forms a stitch, so that's a lot of friction going on. In regular sewing, a top-stitch needle has a larger scarf which acts to protect the thread, however, not sure that is a choice for your machine.
Upper thread breaks
needle may be in backwards
Raise the needle bar to the highest point then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
upper tension may be to tight
the needle may be bent or damaged
thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint
The needles are changed by inserted the hex wrench into what looks to be holes on the front and left side where the needles go into the machine.I'm not sure what size the hex wrench is but it's pretty small. From the manual, "Removing Needle: Unplug the machine. Turn the handwheel
counterclockwise to raise the needle bar to its highest position.
Loosen the needle clamp with the allen wrench and pull the needle out."
and "Inserting needle: When the neddle bar is at the highest position, insert a new needle in the needle holder, making sure that the groove of the needle faces you. Push the needle as far up as it will go and tighten the needle clamp screw." "Removing Needle: Unplug the machine. Turn the handwheel counterclockwise to raise the needle bar to its highest position. Loosen the needle clamp with the allen wrench and pull the needle out."
The machine takes DB x 1, or 1738 needles, and a size 14 needle is recommended.
