Question about Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop

Topic dead PC (edited for clarity and punct) Dead dell optiplex gx260.

When I insert the power cable(wall to PC), it will boot and run, other wise it can not boot and load the OS . For some reason , the power switch confuses me.

    Are you saying that it will only start by plugging in the power cable not when you use the start button on the front?

    I think you mean that if the unit is sitting powered off with the power cable plugged in, it will take unplugging it and plugging it back in to start the system. This could be a problem with the power supply or the motherboard. Ensure your BIOS is set all to default settings and see if this happens after that.

That is how it's supposed to work, when you plug it in it works, when you unplug it, it will not work.....

double check cable from the mainboard to your hardisk like IDE or SATA together with the power cord
just make sure if its fully inserted. boot up the the pc press delete to check UP THE BOIS IF THE HARDISK is connected.

Just replaced ram on optiplex 260 won't boot, placed old ram back in still won't boot


Open the case. And try to reset BIOS by removing motherboard battery, disconnect the source power cable and press the power on button for 15 - 30 seconds. Reseat the battery, insert the RAM module and plug the power cable. Power on normally. When prompted, load BIOS defaults or simply press <F1> to resume. See what happens.

Amber power light remains lit. Nothing else happening. Can't even "force" power off. Must pull electrical power cable to make light go off.

I suggest going through my tip pertaining to this matter, it is entitled My Computer is not turning on!!! Is it dead!!! No POST!!! this should guide you through the process and get your PC going again.

Does anything show up on the screen when you access your BIOS?
Have you tried a fresh install?
Are there two video adapters installed (one integrated and the other in the AGP slot?

Dell Optiplex Power-on Problem

An Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc...
Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Optiplex GX260 won't boot

I had the same issue and accidentally discovered a temporary solution. Unplug the power from the back of the machine, open the case and unplug the ATX power connection from the motherboard. With the ATX cable unplugged, plug the power cord back in. When you try to turn the computer back on the power light should turn orange and fans should be spinning, with it powered on plug the ATX connector back in. That should turn the computer off. Turn it back on and it should boot fine. You can even shutdown and restart, but when the power is unplugged you will have to go thru the same process to get it back up. This sounds crazy but it worked on mine. Good Luck!
