An EF code is indicative of an Evaporator Fan Circuit Failure. Can it be stopped by ice or frost? Absolutely. Press the freezer up button and the freezer down button simultaneously for 6-8 seconds and you will enter a test mode. Every time you press the fresh food button after entering the test you will advance to the next test. They are not in numerical order. Go to test 26 (The defrost circuit test) and it will show CL for closed or OP for open. If it shows OP you have a defrost issue. If CL there is no defrost problem. Next go to test 15 - keeping in mind they ( the tests are Not in numerical order). When you get to 15 press the main power on/off button. The 1st time you press it the display will show LO and the fan should be on low speed. The next time you press the power button it will show HI, and the fan should be on high. It is a twelve vdc fan motor wire colors red, yellow, brown, and blue. They originate at the j6a and j4a connectors. If the fan does not come on in the test the check will be made at the control. There should always be 12vdc between brown and red, and there should be 9 - 12 vdc between brown and yellow in the test. The blue wire is a tach wire and feeds info back to the lower control which is located behind the kick plate underneath the unit. EX factory service 22 years currently an instructor.   • Hello Ruel;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Its SY EF and not 5Y EF
Error Code SY EF is the System Evaporator Fault.
This usually means there is NOT enough air flow over the sensor, this can mean a faulty sensor, or evaporator fan motor.

Look at the back of the freezer wall. Is there frost? You may have defrost heater. You unit will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. At this time everything will shut down except for your lights, your defrost heater will turn on for 20-30 minutes to defrost your evaporator (Cooling) coil. Then your unit will restart. If you have
a bad defrost heater the cooling coil will ice up and lock up your fan. With a multi-meter set to the lowest Ohms. Unplug your unit. Disconnect the heater and Ohm it out. You should get a reading of 25 Ohms or more. If '0' or OL the heater is bad. You need to unplug for at least 24 hours to defrost.

You may have a bad evaporator (Cooling) fan motor. Set your meter to Volts. If you get a reading across the motor of 110 or more volts the fan is bad.

These parts are generally under $50.00 each. If you call a service technician the price will be marked up 200-300%.
  • These parts are not difficult to replace unless you have a bottom freezer.
  • You are looking at about a $350.00 service call.

Fridge started to make a humming Unplugged it,let it sit for an hour,it was fine.water on the floor from the ice-and I unplugged it for the night.I got up shook it-worked for 2 weeks.

What sort of "humming" noise? Refrigeration systems rely upon vapor compression to operate -- meaning occasionally to maintain temp a compressor will kick in which can hum.

What does the error code 5y EF mean on my Frigidaire refrigerator

Good Morning Friend,

I understand you are receiving an "SY EF" code on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS3R5EMB. The "SY EF" code stands for system error with the evaporator fan. This possibly means that there is something going on with your evaporator fan or it could possibly be a false error code. . I suggest resetting your appliance, by either unplugging it or shutting the power off at your home's circuit breaker, for 3-5 minutes. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully.

-Best Regards-

1st water dispenser not working now EF code

EF code on a Frigidaire refrigerator means Evaporator Fan problem. The motherboard on the FGHC2345LF can be sensing a problem with your evaporator fan. The fan could be failing so I advise that you keep an eye on the evaporator fan. All cooling will stop if this fan fails. I believe you are having two unrelated issues. The=> 241734302 Water Inlet Valve

is possibly becoming defective and not allowing water to dispense.

The temp gauge reads 5Y for freezer and EF for the refrigerator side. Appears to be not running.

EF code comes up.

Hi! Try this step for it usually works and has a good chance of success. Try to unplug your frigidaire from power source and leave it for a couple of hours or more. Try plugging it again and the system should reset itself. To keep your food cool inside the freezer while unplugged try to get some dry ice and put it in. Hope this helps and have a good one!
