If you can see the resistors then you will see that they are coloured coded by a series of different coloured rings around them. Go on line and down load colour codes for resistors and compare each resistor code with the printed results and you will be able to read what is the resistance for each resistor. The colour coding is a universal way of recognizing resistor measurements and is applicable to all resistors.. If in doubt check with you local JAYCAR outlet and it will be explained to you.

1996 Buick skylark how to bypass passlock sensor

you need to OHM your current key. There is a pellet on it with tiny piece of metal on each side. Use a multimeter on 20k ohm setting. Here is a video on how to read the resistor on the key.

Then you need to by resistors and get the value within 10% of your key value. Radio shack can probably help you get what you need. OR look on EBay for VATS resistor pack. Then go under the dash on the driver side. There will be an orange tubing wire it will have two small white wires. You just cut those two white wires and attach your resistor to those. Just do not cut the yellow wire which is for airbags.

The security light is flashing and the car wont start how do i fix it

May have a fault in the VATS. Most likely the wires that come from the ignition lock are broke. That is the weak link of the VATS.
Need to measure the resistance of the pelet n your key and basically add that value of resistors to the wire for the lock cylinder at the bottom of the column where they come out.
If you do a search for "VATS bypass" you should find diagrams of how to do this. (This is mistakenly refered to a VATS bypass while it really is not a bypass. The Pass Key module always stays in play. It just bypasses the weak link in the system.)

I have a 1989 Allante. Problem getting a key programed/problem starting/problem locking doors. I had several locksmiths go thru All 13 codes with no success. Any way to diconnect the alarm/theft system...

Hello: You have a VATS security system in your car. There is NOT any programmer9ng procedure' The key has a pellet resistor. The ignition lock cylinder reads this value and sends it to the VATS module. What happens is the wires on the lock cylinder break, then the car will not start. There are 15 different resistor values. On your computer if you will type in how to by-pass the Vats system you will get send to a web page that will tell you step by step how to do it. I have an original 1989 Cadillac Service Manual. Does the ign. key have a computer chip in it?

No. GM's vats system has a resistor in the ignition key. The Vats has a control module that needs to see the value of that resistor to start the car. If it doesn't see the resistance the car will crank but will not start up. Try your back up key. If that doesn't work the the Vats system needs to be replace. GM has only 15 different value resistors to A million different possible ignition key cylinder combonations.

1996 buick skylark..alarm theft keeps flashin..try to start..it turns but wont stay running..

Need a bit more information, Is the security light on, have you checked for spark and fuel pressure, just in case you did and know it is the passlock system then check this out, hopefully it will ansewer your problem, please rate your mechanics help.

GM Passlock I & II Information

Please study the following information carefully WHEN INSTALLING REMOTE START systems on a 1996 or later GM car or truck.
Introduced in 1996, GM has changed the VATS anti theft system to Pass-Lock system. This is a similar device to the VATS system, in that there is a resistor present during the start cycle. However, in the PASSLOCK system, the resistor has been placed inside the ignition switch, instead of the key. See the GM V.A.T.S page for more information.
To remotely start a car with this feature, you must bypass the PASSLOCK system. There are two methods of doing so.. The first, is to permanently bypass this system. This is the easiest method for accomplishing your task. The second way, is to temporarily bypass the PASSLOCK, by introducing relays into the system, which retain all of the features of the system, while allowing your remotes start module to bypass it automatically during a remote start cycle.
Vehicles effected
(1996 and newer): N & J body cars, such as
Pontiac Sunfire and GrandAm Passlock-1
Chevrolet Cavalier Passlock-1
Buick Skylark Passlock-1
Oldsmobile Achieva Passlock-1

1997 or newer
Chevrolet Malibu Passlock-II
Oldsmobile Cutlass Passlock-II

1998 or newer
All trucks , SUVs and Vans Passlock-II

It is important to pay special attention to the fact that there are many different ways of achieving the same goal. There are actually 2 different Passlock-II systems. On the next page, there are tests to establish which type of passlock-II your car has.

Relays shown are standard automotive 5 pin spdt relays, available from IEI.
A multi meter is required to measure the resistance values. Accuracy is important within 5%.

Once the value of the resistor is measured, a resistor of the same value +/-5% must be purchased (Radio Shack2.gif, for example). You can also use a Potentiometer (POT), which can be adjusted to the same value of the resistor in the ignition switch.

pslc1.gif Passlock-I bypass procedure....

1: Remove the top and bottom shrouds from the steering column.
2: Find the 3 wire ribbon cable2.gif, coming from the ignition switch, containing White, Black, Yellow (Sometimes White, Black, Black). These are THIN wires.
3: Locate the Black 6 position connector on the LEFT side of the steering column, right above the ignition switch position. There is a BLACK (Thin) wire in this connector, called "Bulb Test", which shows Ground with ignition in the Off position, OPEN in the "Run" position, and GROUND in the "Crank" position.
4: Turn the ignition switch to the "Run" position. Do not crank the car.
5: Cut the Thin Yellow wire and strip both ends.
6: Without cutting the Black wire, expose some of the copper.
7: Using the ohmmeter, measure from the Yellow wire (the end coming from the ignition switch), to the exposed Black wire and record the value. Measure more than once to assure you have the right value.
8: Acquire the same size resistor and 3 relays, and perform the connections shown in the diagram below.

There are 2 types of Passlock-II systems. To determine which system you have, follow these instructions;

1: Locate two wires, which are THIN and are in the main ignition harness.. Orange/Black (or Black) and Yellow.
2: Cut the Yellow wire, and strip back some of the insulation from the Orange/Black (Or Black) wires.
3: Turn the ignition to the "Run" position ( don't crank the starter). Measure and record the value measured from the KEY SIDE of the Yellow wire, to the Black/Orange wire.
4: Turn the key to the "Crank" position and release. Now read the value again.

What is a vat?

Vat stands for Vehicle anti-theft system. If you notice there is a small pellet in the key for your buick. That is a resistor pellet or chip, this was the first attempt at a transponder key. the ksy has one of 17 differing resistor values that is read by the ignition switch and sent to the anti theft computer. The system will not allow the fuel pump and ignition systems to get power unless it sees the appropriate resistence level within specifications.

How to remove or bypass the factory installed anti theft vehicle immobilizer.

in the 1996 sunfire GM uses an anti theft lock system. It can be triggered by all sorts of things. In order to relinquish this you must have a key to turn the ignition. These are not coded just plain cut keys. Once you attain this you put the key in and turn the ignition to the ACC position and wait ten minutes (theft lock light will turn off), turn off and take key out. You MUST do this 3 times and then the theft lock will be disarmed.
