Both handsets have worked fine since we purchased them a few months ago, new. Now they are both coming up unregistered and not working. Can't find box or manual. How do I get them working again?

Up to 6 handsets can be registered with the DECT 1480 phones. I have the 5 phone unit and needed to add the 6th phone. All I got was "Searching" in the display and the battery wouldn't even charge!
So here's what you have to do to get additional phones (up to 6 units) to work with the base. If you can get past step 1, it's a snap...
Step 1: Place a charged battery in the handset. This could be a problem if all your handsets are not registered, since unregistered phones don't charge (who thought of that design?). What I did was SWAP the battery from an already registered and charged phone with the new unregistered phone.
Step 2: Here's where the magic happens. Press the 'END' and '#' keys simultaneously... hold them down until a System Reset menu appears. Select "Deregister HS" and press Menu.
Step 3: Now, do the same thing again (hold down END and #), but this time select Base Unavailable and press Menu. You will see Base Unavailable Yes/No... Select Yes. Then place the handset in the base, wait a few seconds, and Voila!. it's registered. You can even change handset numbers using this menu if you play around with it.
Thank you, helpful employee at Costco for supplying the magic code. And hey there, UNIDEN... including this in the operation manual would have saved many customers much grief with de-registered phones!
My phone does the same thing and has done it periodically since I've owned it. The buttons on the base unit stopped working a few months after I purchased it, at the moment I have what sounds like the same problem as you, the display stays backlit and the highlight switches from one menu item to another while beeping.
This doesn't, however, prevent the phone from working fine.
The only thing I've found that *may* fix it is to swap the power adaptor for the base unit with one of the adaptors hooked up to the handsets.
I don't want to give up my phone yet because I can't find anything anything similar from any manufacturer, with two lines and the ability to pair our cell phones with the base unit so I'm in the market for a replacement base unit and I may send mine to Texas.
UNREGISTERED means the phone has not yet been set up to work with any particular base. I don't have any Phillips phones, so I can't tell you the procedure, but it should be outlined in the owners manual. Look for registering your handsets.
I purchased this model phone as a refurb item and also had display blanking out issues. Mine related to a problem with the battery, which new batteries fixed. Try swapping the batteries between handsets and see if the fault moves to the other handset, which will prove if it is a battery problem. Otherwise, it would seem to be an internal fault in that handset. Try and arrange repair/replacement from the seller.
IF YOUR HANDSET WAS WORKING AND THEN STOPPED WITH "UNREGISTERED": If lowercase unregistered is in main display and a reg. appears under the left soft key: Press the left soft key below REG. and then press and HOLD the button on the top of the base station until the two indicator lights on top of the base station turn off. Wait until handset signals with beeps and registered. You are done
THIS IS FOR FRESH OUT OF THE BOX REGISTRATION OF UNREGISTERED HANDSET Press REG Register shall be highlighted. Scroll to Register. Press Select. Enter the system PIN (Default: 0000). Use CLEAR to correct typing errors. Press ENTER to confirm. • Your handset starts searching for the base. Press and HOLD the round button on top of the base unit until the two indications turn off. • If registration is successful, the signal icon
holding down end+# keys at the same time on the phone for about 10
secs (you will hear a beep) will deregister the handset. If you have a
dead handset and want to deregister it from the base, you have to reset
the base. unplug the phoneline and power. hold down the "delete
message" key, plug power back in. about 10 secs later, you will hear a
long beep (theres a short beep upon powerup as well). At this point all
handsets are deregistred and you will have to reregister them with the
end+# trick. this way when #1 handset is dead, you can make a working
one #1 and get the broken one fixed
BTW, this is a woot warranty, not uniden warranty. however the
uniden rep gave me the number to the people who refurb (rox0rz!) these.
I'll post an update when I finally get ahold of them (and the number if
its actually helpful)
I had a similar problem. I unregistered the main handset & then
when I attempted to re-register it, I had the same issue (handset
attempts the registration process & eventually fails). I tried
everything including pressing the "Reset" button on the back of the
basestation & downloading firmware version 1.0.4.80 (started with
1.0.4.50). Turns out I had to press & hold the "Page" button on the
basestation while the handset is attempting the registration process.
This
info is in the manual. I know, I should have read the manual first. But
at least I'm not alone; the guy at Philips told me to return the
product because it must be defective.
It appears that the
registration process is a security process/exchange between the
basestation & handset. I'm not certain how standard this process is
(i.e., whether differing manufactures utilize the same security
protocols). If not, it is likely that other manufacturers' handsets
cannot talk to the basestation. I mention this because you said you
registered the main handset multiple times, so it sounds like you are
familiar with the registration process.
Nevertheless, this might
help others who decide to spend their weekend pressing the "reg" button
a bzillion times, watching it fail as many times, & looking for

I just successfully registered 4 TCX905s with my TRU8865 base - it's documented in the TCX905 manual.
Be sure the handset you want to register is fully charged.
Remove the handset you want to register from its charger.
Now unplug the AC for the main base, hold down the 'find handset' key on the base and plug the AC in again, when it beeps, you can let go of that button.
Hold down the '#' on the handset you want to register, it will show 'Registering Handset...' and when it beeps, it's done - registered, you're good to go :)
