Nav key stopped working
I had the same problem until today. This is what I did:
I opened up the handset and took most of it apart:
There are 2 screws in the battery compartment and you have to push something in on the sides to pull it apart. It won't come completely apart because there are wires connecting to the speaker. There are 5 screws on the inside that hold the board to the phone. I unscrewed those. The buttons are all on 1 rubber sheet. The problem is that the 4 metal connectors under the 4 way button (not on the board, the ones on the back of the rubber) have somehow deteriorated. To fix it I glued a very small piece of tin foil (I used a really thin brand) to each of the 4 connectors. They have to be done separately and the foil can't be too thick or the foil will be touching the board without a button press (found this out the hard way). Test it before tightening the screws to make sure everything worked and then put it back together.
Note: You may need to ground yourself so static electricity doesn't fry the board. If it breaks the phone, don't blame me :) I went this route because it was either play around to find a solution or buy a new phone. I don't know how long this will work for, but I hit all the buttons a bunch of times and they all work.
Uniden handset TCX905 with base unit TRU8866-if compatible?
I just successfully registered 4 TCX905s with my TRU8865 base - it's documented in the TCX905 manual.
Be sure the handset you want to register is fully charged.
Remove the handset you want to register from its charger.
Now unplug the AC for the main base, hold down the 'find handset' key on the base and plug the AC in again, when it beeps, you can let go of that button.
Hold down the '#' on the handset you want to register, it will show 'Registering Handset...' and when it beeps, it's done - registered, you're good to go :)
How to find a handset phone?
Just use the pager button on the base and listen for the ring on the phone. It will either beep or ring. If it is like mine you will have walked by it several times at least.
How to remove Uniden handset from base
The brillian people at Uniden don't feel it necessary to provide this type information in their manuals. You have to trial and error to find it, but what can you do. All you have to do to reset the base unit itself is to unplug the power, then while holding down the delete key, plug it back in. Hold the delete button down until you hear a beep, which indicates it has reset. Now you can readd handsets and they will start at 1.
ELBT595 & TCX905 compatibility

Can I add another uniden hand set to a uniden D1680 series
The Uniden D-1680 system can have up to 12 handsets registered to the base. (The phone system was sold in bundles with 0 to 11 accessory handsets.) However, this cordless phone system has been discontinued. I can only find used DCX160 handsets (the compatible accessory handset) on Amazon and E-bay.
I hope this helps.
