Is gas turned on with pilot light or electronic?

We have a Kenmore model 22000 gas dryer (stock 7207611W) which indicates it is natural gas, has been in house since we bought in 1976. How is flame started when heating starts. We need to turn off to tent house for termites but do not know how gas is shut off or turned back on. All these years and we never needed to know this.

No pilot. Unplug the power to the unit and it cannot run/ignite. There is a shutoff on the valve behind the front panel if you want to turn off the gas supply without moving the dryer.

You could have a blown fuse because of a clogged vent or a bad thermistor. A thermistor is used by electronic controls to measure temp changes inside the dryer. If the sensor is open then the brain does not have a clue how hot the dryer is. So it shuts down. Repair clinic has an excellent thermistor replacement video.

Not heating up Gas Dryer

Modern gas dryers do not have a pilot light. They have an electronic ignitor (glow or spark). A glow ignitor turns on several seconds before the gas turns on and should get orange hot. A spark ignitor should make a clicking or buzzing noise.

Most likely the ignitor is bad but you can check it fairly easily to make certain. The best instructions I have found are at

http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/dryer/gdryer/check/ignitor.php

If it is the ignitor it can be replaced with a few hand tools. Remove the bad ignitor. Write down the make, model, and serial # of your dryer. Call your local appliance parts store to see if they have one it stock before driving over there.

Kenmore gas dryer

That model does not have a pilot light.  It has an electronic ignitor.  If it is not igniting, either the igniter is not getting a signal to ignite, the igniter is burned out, or the gas solenoid is broken.  Probably the igniter is burned out.  It is item number 3018 at RepairClinic.com.
