How do I get my Iphone touch screen to respond if resetting it is not working?

I have a 3Gs and the touch screen in messing up. It used to be a minor problem that I could fix by resetting the phone but that isn't working this time. All the buttons are working, I just can't get the touch screen to respond in any way.

A nonresponsive IPod touch touch screen can usually be resolved by updating to the latest IOS version. If the device has already been updated, the client would then want to restore the IPod touch to the original factory settings. Should restoring the device and the completion of basic troubleshooting http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1827 fail to resolve the issue, the problem is most likely hardware related. Apple strongly discourages end-users from performing hardware replacement on their devices.

I would suggest calling 1-800-myapple to determine whether this device is under warranty or not.

Hint: If Apple 2nd level phone support were to learn that the malfunctioning device was causing any type of electrical shock when handled, they have a standing policy to replace the device immediately. This is replacement policy is done for legal purposes and is mostly done without question; however, if this is regarding an older device, the client may need push for the replacement.

I've recently purchased a iPhone 3GS, everything is ok apart from the home button, when switching from app or unlocking mode I have to press really hard to get it to respond, I know this is not normal as...

That's common. iPhone 4's and the 3GS are made differently. The button in a 3GS is actually part of the screen as in a 4 it's separate from the screen making it easier to be pushed down and not get as dirty. It needs taking apart and cleaned.

The 3G/3GS are basically the same you may need to only reset the connections or you may need to replace the screen.

Iphone 3GS touch pad stopped working

As you are using 3GS, your warranty would still be valid. So, go to your nearest Apple Store with everything from your box(all your manuals and papers) and go the the Genius Bar. They will replace your iPhone free of charge. I had the same problem with my 3GS.
GOOD LUCK !!!!!

Iphone screen not responsive in certain areas

You have a broken digitizer or touch panel. Apple should give you a replacement. If you're out warranty, you can try to open it and replace the touch panel. You can get the part on Ebay or at iPhone Repair and there is a free guide that shows you how to open an iPhone and install parts at iPad Repair Guide.
