While downloading bloomberg app, it hung up and i reset the phone during the install. Since then, it has displayed the apple start up screen and thats it. If you power down the phone completely and reboot it it goes right back to that screen and hangs up. Worse yet, when I plug it into itunes it freezes my computer up until you unplug it again. I'm being escalted as we speak after 45 mins on the phone going thru basics with an Apple Tech. No luck there!
I had the similar problem. Found this suggestion on the web to reset iPhone 3G to it's original settings. You may have to restore your media and data files after resetting. It's the only way out for me since I can't get beyond the "Apple Logo" thingy, and I am too lazy to bring it down to the Apple Store.
Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.
Good luck.

thank you xxxx
The TOP, 1st Class method. Thank you Wolverine2
thank you
After iTunes downloads the update and firmware, you may have to unplug your iPhone, Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 and it should start downloading to your device. This is how it worked for mine, may be different with others.
×
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.
This 'fix' worked for me when my phone froze today. Hope it might help others too.

Ok so make sure your phone is plugged into itunes. Then hold down the power and home button for 30 seconds. Then just keep holding the home button until a popup shows up in itunes saying your phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. Restore your phone and it works.

If your iPhone doesn't enter service mode, be patient.
1) turn the device off
2) start itunes
3) hold the home button
4) connect the cable to your computer
5) wait... keep holding down the home button.
I had to keep my iPhone 3GS' home button down for more than two minutes before it entered the recovery mode!
When it shows up in iTunes you can restore the phone. Good luck!

I did all the above and sat with apple techs on the phone for 2 hours off and on while doing this and that. I am on my 4th phone now. Right before I got the new one, I found one article online that said try holding both buttons down way longer than normal. So I did and counted off about a minute and a half and let go of the off button and then the home and to my shock, it said it was ready to be restored. I still am returning it since the new one hasn't locked up once but I figure I had nothing to lose by trying. The apple techs are nice and I know they are working on this. I am cautiously adding apps one or two at a time.

Well even dough we have been getting this problem so often at our Apple care department we have no way to resolve this problem what your best issue to this regards will be is going to the Apple store and tell them what is the problem and they should do a swap that means they will change your iPhone to a brand new one. Im sorry to hear that Apple could not work out anything on the phone.
Thank You,

Turn the phone off. Hold the menu button and keep pressing it as you plug in the usb cord. The iphone will now start up and go into recovery mode. It should let you restore it in recovery mode. If that fails it looks like you need anew logic board which in theory you can replace yourself. Here's aguide on how to disassemble an iPhone. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to have somebody else do it for you there are third party iPhone Repair Services.

Hi All,
Best way to do it is is keep home button pressed with sleep button together and plug your white lead in the back of the phone but not in the pc then you will see the frozen apple on the screen dissapear.
Then open i tunes and put the usb lead in which will sync the phone and get it back to normal

Try this first:
In most cases, you can solve these problems by putting the phone into recovery mode and restoring it from backup. To do that, follow these instructions:
1. Connect the iPhone's USB cable to your computer, but not your iPhone.
2. Turn your iPhone off. If the phone won't turn off in the traditional manner, just keep holding the buttons until the screen goes dark.
3. Once you've turned the device off, press the home button on the face of the device and plug in the USB cable to the device's dock connector.
4. When it turns on, keep pressing the home button until the iTunes logo appears on the screen.
5. You'll know the phone is now in recovery mode because a window in iTunes will tell you.
6. You can then start the restore process by clicking the "Restore" button in the iTunes window.
Definitely go to fix iPhone stuck at Apple logo.

I am having the same problem and have had this problem for a while now! I have a iphone 3g white 16gb! I have been able to make the home screen appear maybe two times out of the ten or so times that it has locked on the home screen. For me, the problem always happens when i try to update or install a app from itunes or the iphone app store. I am trying many things and will let everybody know if i can pinpoint the procedure to break back into the home screen! I am tired of having to beat the first stages of all of my games over and over again. I do have mobileme so no matter what I always have my contacts, calenders, bookmarks, and mail settings. Please if their is a genius out there that can fix this problem please enlighten us. I have been a iphone user from the start and i think that the iphone is the biggest pioneering technology to break into the main stream since the home cpu. Also, I have had my phone replaced and it did nothing, so please don't waste your time going to the genius bar.

I have the same problem. It occurred while installing an app. I tried to pull the sim card and do as suggested above. But that did not resolve my problem. I'm going to ATT store for a replacement.

This is a very easy fix.... Simply go the the sprint store and UpTrade it for the new HTC evo.... Problem solved you never have to worry about your iPhone again... I dealt with iPhone issues for over 3 years and now I dont have the headache...

My phone was freezing up ....just displaying a blank white screen for hours....keep messing with it and was determined to fix it....eventually i held both top power button and bottom button at the same time for about 10 seconds...mine restarted back up and worked fine...pisses me off that it messess up in the first place...but this seemed to fix it

Truthfully whoever reads this post now as it is way later then all the other posts. what i did and i dont know how many times or what i did to get it fixed, but it just seemed to be a major lag issue.
All i did was turn the phone on and off using the Home Key + the Power/Lock over and over again. I got frustrated with it after several attempts and let it sit on the apple screen. After 15-30 secs it went to the Home screen and i was set. I plugged the phone in again and it ubplugged itself/replugged itself for like 10 time about the same amount of attempts id made trying to plug it in. Now everything is fine all apps still work.
Posted on Apr 16, 2010
I held down the power button and the home button until the apple logo went away then reappeared. After the iPhone started back up everything worked fine and I now have MMS. Try doing this before anything else.

WHAT TO DO AFTER RESETTING IPHNOE 3G
Posted on Jun 15, 2009
Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it.
Reset
To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond
More resets:
Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.
Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

yes this has happened to me twice. Both times while downloading an update to one of the apps that froze during the install process. Funny enough, even though the apple logo is frozen, I can access all th itunes info using PD+Rescue, which is fully operational.
Just tried to call the phone. It rings (from the calling phone) as if there is no problem, furthermore, I can hear the "GSM feedback" coming from the speakers of my computer.
However still stuck on Apple logo
My 3G Iphone is frozen, wont sync with my computer, won't power down, can't change applicaitions, what do I do
This freeze happened to me, whilst typing
I have just cured it by doing the following:
1. Removed the O2 Sim Card
2. Held in the 'Home' Button and 'On/Off button' at the same time until screen went to Apple logo.
3. Replaced O2 Sim Card
4. Held in the 'Home' Button and 'On/Off button' at the same time until screen went to normal Wallpaper and phone came alive.
Hope this might help some others.

I am having the EXACT!!! problem. I haven't been able to figure it out. I got fed up with having to restore my "first" iPhone 3g and went to the Apple store to get it switched out. Got a new phone and... Yay it's STILL HAPPENING!!! Thanks Apple for making everything proprietory and yet still more buggy then my 8925 which runs Windows Mobile 6.0
While down loading an application update, my i phone froze and would not restart beyond the home  screen Apple logo. Even with removing the SIM card and rebooting, i continues to be frozen at the Apple logo. The ATT store said sorry for your luck, go ask Apple....
yea mine is stuck at the start up apple logo. it wont do any thing, wont sync, freezes itunes. any help?
Same problem. Reboot with both buttons get me back to the apple. iTunes freezes if I attach the phone to a PC (two different PCs). Repeated hard resets yield same result (white apple). If not plugged in, result is finally that the device dies (battery runs down).
