sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

SOURCE: my company has just installed credant protection

If your WD drive is running RAID, you could try disabling the RAID capability and see if that helps. If not, then it may be a policy setting that is being enforced by your IT department.

SOURCE: Sony Vaio laptop could not access 1TB external hard drive

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this data recovery program to recover your files.

You have opened this hard drive and introduced dust into the drive.

WD 1TB MyBook lost my data forever?!.. please help!

Do you hear a clicking sound or a constantly running motor coming from this drive? If so, your drive is dead. I think the arm that reads the data off of the platter(s) is broken. It can't be fixed but check your warranty for a free replacement from WD.
Hope you had everything backed up to a cd/dvd.
