I have windows 7
Don't forget to install the Canon software that came with the camera. If you lost the camera, try the Canon website I managed to get the newest software for Windows 7 last week. Works fine.
Before your computer can work with any camera, you need drivers and some management software. Canons software is called ZoomBrowser EX. (also needed, when you want to manage pictures from a external card reader)

If your camera is not relatively new and you're running Vista or Windows 7, your computer may have problems seeing it. Unfortunately, this can't be corrected because Canon did not yet update drivers for your camera. But there exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive USB card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

You can try the following:
- install the software provided with the camera
- search on the web for new or updated versions of the software
- check the camera connection settings. The computer has to see it as a flash memory, and not peer to peer (PTP) transfer.
- Try downloading with a card reader. In general this is the better way, as you don't have to worry about camera battery levels

Skip the installing of drivers and software. Simply buy a card reader/writer. This is a great way to get your pictures downloaded from the camera. Remove the card put it in a card reader, download the files to where you want them, then edit or view as you please.
