Hi, I have a Canon Power Shot IXUS 500 camera and I can't seem to get to work the 'Canon CameraWindow' on my Windows 7 edition. Please help!
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa.

This camera is designed to store images and videos to a memory card, not to stream them to a computer. It cannot be used as a webcam.

Solve your problem by using a card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop.

I don't think you'll find a driver for this camera. But if you invest $10 or so, you can get a USB card reader. Take the card out of the camera, insert it into the card reader, and Windows 7 will 'see' the card as another drive on the computer. You'll be able to view all the pictures on the card and move/copy them to the hard drive on your computer if you want.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.
