I was reinstalling Vista Home Premium on my Acer Extensa 5420, using
recovery DVDs made on that laptop with the Acer E-Recovery program. The
laptop turned off during the install, which is what my laptop has
always done if it's too hot during non-windows stuff, like the BIOS or
a OS installer like this, and now it won't even turn on. I press the
power button, the fan, HDD, and DVD drive all make noise, and the power
light turns on, but the screen is blank (not even a backlight) and then
the power light turns off, turns back on, and tries again...
I think that there is either a problem with the HDD or the BIOS, but I
don't know to reset the BIOS on this laptop (an Acer Extensa 5420) or
how to format it without turning it on...
I don't think it's anything with the power, because it just worked an hour or so ago.
Just for the heck of it, try blowing out the cooling fan with some compressed air. If you have never cleaned it and the fan stops turning, the computer will go into a safe mode and not start up.
Ther should be a vent somewhere on the side of the laptop that vents hot air cooling the CPU. That is where you need to blow it out.
Hope it helps- just a longshot...

Hi,
You can launch the recovery option by pressing 'F10' on startup, or if that fails, you can do a system recovery from the ACER EManagement 'Backup and Restore' option in Windows itself.

Turns out it was a DIMM port, I took out one of my RAM cards and BOOM it worked, both cards worked in one slot and not the other.
I guess that's what was causing it to turn off too. It stinks that I can't fix this, only have a gig of RAM now...
