I built a dell optiplex gx 270. It ran fine for about three months and then one morning I whent to use it and my display is black(in hibernation,) my keyboard dont work, or my mouse. It is like all the output from the PC is disabled. To verify the problem I even hooked the computer up to a different monitor, mouse, and keyboard and there was still nothing. The system lights in the back are all green so everything shows fine, but no control. What can I do to restore functions to my pc.
First, are you sure the power supply is coming on? Check by placing your hand at the back of the computer where the power cord plugs in, turn on the computer and see if you feel air blowing. It sounds like your power supply died.
If you're not using a quality surge protector, you may have fried the PS. Wal-Mart sells a cheapie one that goes bad quickly. If you spend less that $39.95 on a surge protector, you're basically wasting your money.
If the power supply doesn't come on, replace it, but you'll have to purchase it from Dell because they use proprietary PS - so generic won't work.
check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in
check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease might be getting to hot
another possible reason could be a memory dump you might be running to many programs at the one time putting to much strain on the CPU central processing unit
hope this helps

I checked the power supply and it is good. Listening to the computer I can hear the hard drive running and all sounds are good and present. The lights on front and back are all on. I also installed a top of the line surge protector when I made it.
