It looks like you need a new sleep wake button which you canreplace yourself. Here's a guide on how to disassemble an iPhone. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to have somebody else do it for you there are third party iPhone Repair Services.

You can always JailBreak it with QuickPwn, get it at www.iKnowApple.com and find an app on Cydia that will let you bypass the need for a lock button.

Once the screen goes black, continue holding, count to 8. Release sleep wake switch, continue depressing home button. Wait for iTunes to recognize, and you'll be prompted to restore.

Screen stay in white colour

Reset

To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond

  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for 10 seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy New Year!

My iphone 3G just shut off on its own & it will not come back on when I try to trun it back on. Does anyone know more or less what I can do to fix that?

Is it completely charged? Plug it in and charge it overnight.

If it is charged, these steps may help:

Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a 10 seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

More resets:

Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

Iphone screen frozen, also phone not showing up in itunes...

iPhone may exhibit a problem where it does not respond to any button, switch, or touchscreen input.
To turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone.
To turn iPhone on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
If the iPhone remains unresponsive after trying the above steps or if it is in a different state, such as showing a persistent Apple logo on the display, try resetting the device:

Before following the steps you need to take a backup of your iphone

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.

When you connect your iPhone to your computer, an iPhone icon should appear in iTunes in the left column under Devices. But if it doesn't, this troubleshooting assistant can help.

1. Make sure your computer has the following:

and one of the following operating systems:
  • Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later
  • Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
  • Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate Edition
If your computer does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your computer before using iPhone.

2. If iPhone is very low on power or if the battery is fully depleted, it can take up to 10 minutes to appear in iTunes.

3. Connect iPhone to a USB port that is built into the computer instead of the keyboard or an external USB hub.
If iPhone still doesn't appear in iTunes, try a different USB port.

4. Restart the iphone:
To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone not responding? To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

5. If you face the same issue reinstall the latest version of itunes

If this does not resolve the issue, try completely uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling the latest version of iTunes.

Even after following the steps if you face the same issue, then it must be some third-party software (such as security software, anti-virus software, and webcam drivers) may prevent iTunes from recognizing your iPhone. You may have to update your software, adjust software settings, or temporarily disable the software.
In Windows, MSCONFIG is used to troubleshoot conflicting software. For assistance using MSCONFIG, select from the following:
XP | Vista
