  1. Download all XP drivers from Toshiba and store them on external harddrive or USB flashdrives
  2. Prepare a XP Bootable CD with Intel Storage Drivers (ICH10 now) slipstreamed
  3. Boot the R500 with this CD and delete all the existing partitions (NTFS version from Vista is newer than XP, so installing XP on Vista version NTFS partition will crash)
  4. Create just 1 primary partition for Windows XP (at least 20GB prefered but please don't use up all the space, use multiples of 1024MB, eg 30G = 40*1024=40960MB)
  5. Once XP has installed and booted in, go to Computer Management, Storage -> Disk Management and change the CDROM's Driver letter to E (assuming you did what I said, originally the XP is on C, CD-ROM on D), then create a primary partition using up the rest of the hard disk space and label it with D.
  6. Copy the "i386" folder from XP CD to D drive, this will get rid of "Please insert XP CD..." at later stage when you change do some system change.
  7. install all neccessary drivers from the external HD/Flashdrive.
  8. Please also disable "AutoPlay" feature on XP as there are so many Virus/Trojans that uses this AutoPlay feature to infect and spread. (XP Pro only: Start->Run, gpedit.msc, Enter. expand Administrative Templates and click System on both Group Policy roots, double click "Turn off Autoplay". Enable it on All drives..., OK)
  9. Install your applications and do a windows update at the end.

I install XP to Portege M200 computers by the following method
Upgrade bios from a USB floppy (get upgrade file from Toshiba online)
after upgrade the computer can boot from the CD drive and install XP. The upgrade goes very slowly for the first half of the install but is installs properly.

At wht stage of the installation do you get the blue screen. Did you try installing from a different cd. Later during the installation you might have to log on to BIOS and there will be an option called disable SATA , you will have to disable it in case your laptop was shipped with Vista or else your hard disks will not get detected.

You will need a Vista disc to format the drive or try using the XP disc to format before you install. You may have bios and processor recognition problems running XP where a notebook is set up to run Vista

Change the HDD to compatibility mode... or get the intel matrix driver and use the f6floppy directory and readme to install the driver by pressing f6 at xp startup. You will need an external floppy disk tho.

Hello! I have the Toshiba Portege R500/Win XP.Now it does not see the hdd. I removed the hdd and checked it with another PC-it works. BIOS does not see the hdd too. What to do? Halp me please. Vlad

Only option is to get BIOS to recognize the hard drive. No going forward without it. You could try loading the BIOS defaults. Saving, and rechecking.

Toshiba Portege R500 hangs when starting up.I have to shut it down again and then start it up for it to work properly. It has windows 7 installed in it

Perhaps you need to disable some of your startup programs. You have ugraded to Win 7? Has this been happening due to the Win 7 upgrade? In Device Manager are ALL the devices working? No unknown devices? Any graphic driver issues?

Need a toshiba portege R500 vista recovery disk

Toshiba Factory Reset
a couple of ways to do that 1) if you have the recovery CDs supplied with the PC - then you can use these - put the CD into the drive and when it boots follow the instructions 2) If you have a recovery partition on the laptop - have a read here to see if you have one http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/outFrm.jsp?ofId=AskIris&searchString=recovery+to+factory 3) This link shows you how to use the partition http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?soid=2291088&pf=true basically as the PC boots TAP F8 key - from the menu that appears choose "repair your computer"
If that option is NOT available then you will need to Order CDs from Toshiba - http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Recovery-media/m-p/9148#U9148

How to install win xp in toshiba portage r200 laptop

This is resolved by installing Intel Storage Manager drivers through "F6" option on XP Setup. YOU MUST HAVE AN EXTERNAL FLOPPY DISK (A Drive)...as the Portege doesn't come with one...and XP does not support USB or CD ROM for this particular function.

To change os from vista to XP

Hi there,
I hate Vista from my guts! I installed XP SP3 (Slipstreamed) and my Toshiba Portege R500 Flies!
I have posted some notes on similar issue from this forum. Use this website's search engine on "Toshiba R500" and you should be able to fine my posts.
My current job involes rebuilding laptops and desktops so many times that I created this automated slipstreamed XP SP3 CD and I had no issues of Harddrive not being found after all the waiting.

Toshiba Portege 7100 SlimLine Notebook

they should be the same the close number just means that they revised something... most laptops have builtin wi fi but if it doesnt just buy a cheapie usb or pc slot card! I would NOT reccomend that you install windows vista on your pc.....there are still yet too many problems with them and you will have A VERY hard time getting drivers that are compatible

as far as the rest of the specs... ask the seller! they should know or see if it says on the ebay auction page

Installing XP on Toshiba Portege R500 Notebook

Guys, if you have the genuine XP CD, please download the Storage Driver from Intel and slipstream it into your version of XP CD. You can also slipstream Service Packs into it as well.
Personally I hate Vista so much. It really brings out the angry devil in me.
By the way, the best and easiest way to slipstream is to install and use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/
Let me know if you want help on installing XP on R500 (I build it a few days ago, but regret to update the BIOS to version 1.06 as I lost the Ctrl key on it).
To get to the BIOS, press and hold the Esc key then Power button.
