How can I get sound on my laptop, I have a DVD in and the picture is ok but no sound. Aged pensioner and not very good with computers

Try a CD and a few other DVD's that you know are good. If they all don't work you may need to re-install the CD driver or the audio driver. You should be able to download them at the link below: http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1042298

Installing XP on Toshiba Portege R500 Notebook

Guys, if you have the genuine XP CD, please download the Storage Driver from Intel and slipstream it into your version of XP CD. You can also slipstream Service Packs into it as well.
Personally I hate Vista so much. It really brings out the angry devil in me.
By the way, the best and easiest way to slipstream is to install and use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/
Let me know if you want help on installing XP on R500 (I build it a few days ago, but regret to update the BIOS to version 1.06 as I lost the Ctrl key on it).
To get to the BIOS, press and hold the Esc key then Power button.

Setup did not found any hard disk installed+toshiba s100-s1133

SATA HARD DRIVE - XP INSTALLATION The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Windows installation setup says not find any hdd disk drives installed and says cannot continue

You need to go into BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key. Check if BIOS still recognizes a hard drive. If not, you need to physically reconnect drive and try again.

My s100-s1133 protege will not boot-up. The

This is unfortunate, as that points at a display problem which in my experience with these laptops comes with very little chance of repair. In my opinion it is caused by overheating of graphics processor due to the portege's relative small build. The fix would require dissasembly of entire laptop and re-soldering of graphics processor. This takes a technician using a microscope equipped station,( my father does this and makes over $40 an hour and I bet his company charges more. It is not cheaper than some new laptop models available today. The non-expensive fix but risky, would be to disassemble board and attempt to re-flow graphics processor connections by heating with heat gun. When I attempted this I lost entire display. My recommendation is to use external monitor if possible, which may prove futile since issue with graphics will likely be visible on that too. good luck

Cant boot up my toshiba lap top. it comes up

the only way to get past the bios password is to open up the case and try to find a jumper on the main board that says bios reset, close that jumper and turn on the computer for one boot, power down and remove the jumper, after that the bios should be reset(bios passwords are usually set as a security measure that is not easy for the average user to bypass such as a windows one that can be removed by formatting the drive and reinstalling windows)

Tosiba Portage A100 notebok Pasword

To reset the BIOS read the information from this link.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.
