I have a Garmin Nuvi 1490T. When I input a destination, the map shows all the streets. When I use the map only, the gps doesn't show any streets. Only the main highway. I have changed the map detail settings but can't get the gps to show the streets. How can I get the gps to show the street details when using the map only?

SOURCE: Garmin nuvi 205 shows no detailed maps found that support routing

Hi,

Go to your account at garmin that you created to manage your maps.

Click myMaps

Click Manage Maps

You should see your unit and it’s unlock codes

Copy all the unlock codes for your device

Close your internet browser
Right click on your desktop

Click new, and then click a new Text Document

Click on the newly created Text Document icon from the desktop

Type your unlock codes into the document
Click File and Save as

Change the file name to gmapprom.unl (( double check this please ))

Change the “Save as type” to "All files"
Close the document

You should see the file gmapprom.unl on your desktop
Right click on the gmapprom.unl file and then click copy

Plug your Garmin device in and then click Computer/ My Computer
Click on the nüvi drive

Right click on the Garmin folder and click paste
Safely disconnect your Garmin device from the computer

this resolves the problem for you.

Regards
Richard.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 200 Maps Disappeared

Hi,
Hope this helps!

I wanted to add maps to my 250W. I found the maps I wanted on a Torrent. However, many searches around various forums never revealed how to install these. Found the following through reading and experimentation.

1. Downoaded map image file GMAPSUPP.IMG. Download also gave me "Use code XXX when generating unlock code for maps"
2. Downloaded Garmin Unlock Generator 1.3 by JetMouse
3. Looked on my GPS to find the UnitID
4. Entered the UnitID into Garmin Unlock Generator. Ignore the GM XT device unlock code and the top Generate button.
5. Selected Map Product as Custom and entered the code given for the downloaded image file.
6. Hit the bottom create button to generate a 25 digit code.
7. Download Img2Gps and run
8. Click Load Folder to load the image file. Select the tick next to it.
9. Check the Use Unlock Key option and paste the 25 digit code in.
10. Load a blank SD card into your Garmin
11. Connect the Garmin to your PC using a USB cable. You should see two dirves in windows: one is the Garmin and the other is the "Removable Disk" SD card.
12. Create a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card
13. Select Folder/Card in Img2GPS
14. Click "Copy Maps". Select the folder /Garmin on the SD card. You may need to click copy again.
15. Upload will take a while.
16. You should now see a file GMAPSUPP.IMG on the SD card in the /Garmin directory.
17. Create a new text file called GMAPSUPP.UNL in the same directory (make sure it does not have a hidden .txt extension).
18 copy the 25 digit unlock key into this file.
19. Close the file.
20. Disconnect the Garmin.
21. On Startup it should load your original maps and the new ones.

SOURCE: my garmin nuvi 255W does not show street level

When in operating mode try the + or - in the upper left and right corners of your screen to zoom in and out. This may be an easy remedy. You can also go into the settings by pressing the wrench on the start uo screen the go to tools. Next go to settings and arrow down in the lower battom right corner. Go to maps and select map detail and set that to most. Alos go back to maps and try setting map view to 3D. If none of this helps go into tools and press the help button and enter - manually using the search tab at the bottom - street view into the built in owners manual and see if this gives you a fix. The owners manual that came with the unit does not have anywhere near the infomation stored inside your unit. If none of this fixes your unit try updating the software by plugging your unit into your comouter via the USB cord and logging into GARMIN.com. Fro ther check for updates - software version 4.0 I believe. If this does not fix the issue then call Garmin customer support at 800-800-1020 and talk with arep that will talk you through resetting your unit. If you have favorites stored in your unit tell the rep so you can save and re-load after resetting. Hope this helps and good luck.

Garmin Street Pilot. No upgrades available from Garmin. Can it be updated some other way?

Hi Steve,

The Street Pilot line was one of the first automotive GPS devices from Garmin, and has got to be 8+ years old. Garmin contracts with Navteq for map software. At one point, Garmin needed to have Navteq compress their new maps so that they wouldn't need to increase the amount of memory in the GPS units and still be able to include all the way points, and new features such as junction view, traffic receivers, text to speech voices, etc. These new maps have an "NT" descriptor in the title. "NT "stands for "New Technology". Non-NT maps are no longer produced.

The new Garmin GPS hardware had to included the ability to decompress maps "on the fly" for display on the screen. As a result, the NT maps will not work in the older Garmin devices.

Your best bet is to either use the Street Pilot - knowing that the routes may no longer provide accurate information, or purchase a New, Refurbished or Used GPS. Garmin offers "Lifetime Maps" as an option for nearly all NT capable GPS units either as a subscription after GPS purchase, or "in the box" when buying a Garmin GPS. You'll get FREE map updates for that GPS up to 4 times per year. This assures you of always having the most recent maps available in your GPS. Look for a model that has "LM" in it (ie: nuvi 1490LM). If it has a "T" in the model name (ie: nuvi 1490T), it has Lifetime Traffic. If it is listed as "LMT" (nuvi 1490LMT) it has both Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic.

I hope helps!

A new ptoduct..HOW DO U SET IT UP. it always seems to show a london map and my 'present position' as some street in london.

Most likely the problem is that your device is stuck in a demo mode, you should go into settings and when you see demo turn that option off.

Hi, do you know if I can install City Select maps I bought for a previous Garmin device now out of order, on a new Garmin 1490T preloaded with City Navigator ? thanks

If you want to test the maps on your new Garmin you can do one of two things. Either you can copy the maps onto an SD card and then insert the card into your GPS. You can also connect the GPS to your computer with the USB cable that was supplied with you unit. Using whatever file manager you normally use with your version of Windows (Windows Explorer, Total Commander, etc), you will be able to see your Garmin GPS as another drive on your system. You can then copy your City Select maps over to your Garmin.

Once you have the maps either directly on your Garmin GPS or on a microSD card, you have to choose to use those maps. From the main screen of your GPS choose Tools>Settings>Map. If your City Select maps are compatible with your GPS they will show up in the list of maps. To make use of the map just choose it by touching the name of the map. Your Garmin will then load that map and display it. If your City Select maps do not show up in the list, or if you choose them and they do not load or give you an error then they are not compatible with your 1490T.

If you need anymore information or help please let me know. Thank you.
