L1 means the scan carriage (the thing with the bulb and mirrors on it, under the main scan glass) is not moving. It has either been bound up by something or the motor is not running it anymore. On the left side of the machine (facing it) check to make sure the scanner lock has not been turned back on/re-engaged (it should be in the area where the paper comes out and lays down in the exit tray - up under there).
Otherwise... remove the glass and make sure there is nothing binding up the carriage - try move it by hand. make sure the carriage wires are ok. check for any loose cables getting in the way. is everything clean inside? If the carriage is locked up then the drive motor may be the issue - it could have seized. you could disconnect the drive motor and see if the carriage moves freely.
Also you want to make sure the white reference strip under the glass and all the mirrors/bulb are clean.
Hope this will help.

I have a message coming up that I don't know what it means.

ADF = Auto Document Feeder (Usually on top)

RADF = Rear Auto Document Feeder, (On the back)

Something is stuck in one of these, a piece of paper, foam, paperclip, twist tie . . . it could be anything. Follow the squealing sound and check the paper feeder rollers.

Find what is in the way and remove it.

Cheers.

The copy paper feed misaligns and jams, what's the fix? Jack

to fix misalign and paper jam problem, follow this steps.

Load one or two sheets of unused plain white full-size paper into the document feeder tray, and then press Start Copy Black to pull the pages through the automatic document feeder. The plain paper releases and absorbs residue from the rollers and separator pad.
NOTE: If the automatic document feeder does not pick up the plain paper, try cleaning the front roller. Wipe the roller with a soft lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.

If the problem persists, or the automatic document feeder does not pick up the plain paper, clean the rollers and separator pad manually.

Follow the steps below to clean the rollers or separator pad.

1.Lift the cover of the automatic document feeder. This allows access to the rollers and the separator pad.
2.Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled water, then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
3.Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off of the rollers or the separator pad.
4.Close the cover of the automatic document feeder.
This should solve the problem. Cheers!

Lines of copies utilizing automatic feeder

look to the side of your big glass and you'll see a piece of glass about 1.5" wide. thats the galss that is used for scanning from the feeder. theres got to be something on that glass. possibly white-out or even a small speck of toner can cause that. look closely.

I am trying to copy a document from the automatic feeder. The feeder will not pick up the document and instead of getting a copy, I get a blank page. I have cleaned the rollers and nothing has changed.

I have noticed that these rollers can wear to the point that they no longer make proper contact with the paper regardless of cleaning. (Especially if you frequently print to paper of varied thicknesses) Try using a card stock sheet in the automatic feeder, if the problem goes away, you will need to replace the rollers to print to standard letter.

Document feeder

Does the adf show a paper jam? If so remove it or look for some thing blocking the paper path and remove it. Also try to turn off the copier and disreconnect the doc feeder and turn it back on and see what happens.
