Mouse pointer seems to randomly move around the screen

Hi. The mouse pointer on my Dell d410 has taken to randomly moving around the screen on startup recently. Within a few minutes it levels itself out and then seems to work ok, but in the meantime the touchpad does not work and using the trackpoint to move the mouse is difficult as you have to fight the movement of the pointer itself. I've tried re-installing the drivers and have done a thorough virus scan but this has found nothing.

Thanks for your help, Robert

I have come accross the same problem. Its really funny - it started about December of last year. Now I see lots of post for people having same problem on same make/model. I wonder if there was a hotfix/driver/patch we downloaded that did not work exactly as planned for the D410. Granted Dell's award winning support was ummmmmm no support but I expect that from them. I am going to reflash my BIOS and reinstall the chipset for it. I don't suspect it will help any but its not much good right now anyways

The problem is in the trackpoint itself, it is defective. The fix is to either disable the function of the trackpoint through software or by physically disconnecting it.

Disabling through software can be done usually through the BIOS or in the Control Panel in windows. If there is no way for you to disable it then you have to remove the keyboard and cut the connector that is coming from the trackpoint control board. Make sure that you do not cut the keyboard cable. The trackpoint cable is usually about 4 wires thick and is seperated from the thicker keyboard cable. The only other thing to do is to replace the keyboard.

The Dell D410 BIOS has a POST setting for the mouse (why they hide this setting is weird). Change it to disable the internal mousepad etc when an external pS2 mouse is used. This allows a USB mouse to take control. Problem solved.

Mouse pointer jumps when moving it on screen.

If you are not using a mouse pad, try that. Using the mouse on reflective or glass surfaces. Try another mouse to see if it has the same issues. Check your mouse settings in control panel to make sure everything seems ok. Update mouse drivers. Finally, you can try to uninstall / reinstall the mouse.

My touchpad jumps around or the arrow won't move

Keep the palms of your hands away from your touchpad.
Just being "close" to the touchpad is enough to move the mouse-pointer.

Mouse cursor moving by itself

In windows xp go into start menu, then into control panel then click on appearance and themes, then move your mouse over to mouse pointers click on it , uncheck "enhance pointer precision, and click apply, that will stop the mouse from acting crazy, this will work with dell mouse pointers and most.
