  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button PROBLEM WITH EXCEL - default.aspx?assetid=za100771021033, click Excel Options, and then click Add-Ins.
    1. View the add-ins and application extensions that are categorized as follows:
    2. Active Application Add-ins Lists the extensions that are registered and currently running in your Office program.
    • Inactive Application Add-ins Lists the add-ins that are present on your computer but are not currently loaded. For example, smart tags or XML Schemas are active only when the document that references them is open. Another example is the COM add-ins that are listed in the COM Add-ins dialog box. If the check box for a COM add-in is selected, the add-in is active. If the check box for a COM add-in is cleared, the add-in is inactive. To learn how to open the COM Add-in dialog box, see the section called Turn off or manage the installed add-ins.
    • Document Related Add-ins Lists template files that are referenced by currently open documents.
    • Disabled Application Add-ins Lists add-ins that were automatically disabled because they are causing Office programs to crash.

Excel may have "Ignore other applications" selected. See THIS Microsoft Knowledgebase Article.

Try going to Excel Options; Advanced tab; and under the 'General' heading: uncheck the box that says: Ignore other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).

Can't reopen circular reference file in excel

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button , click Excel Options, and then click the Formulas category.
    2. In the Calculation options section, select the Enable iterative calculation check box.
    3. To set the maximum number of times that Excel will recalculate, type the number of iterations in the Maximum Iterations box. The higher the number of iterations, the more time that Excel needs to calculate a worksheet.
    4. To set the maximum amount of change you will accept between calculation results, type the amount in the Maximum Change box. The smaller the number, the more accurate the result and the more time that Excel needs to calculate a worksheet.

Here you can download a FREE Excel add-in that removes/cracks sheet and workbook password protection in Excel®.
NB! This program can't remove file protection, i.e. if you are unable to open the file, this program won't help you. You could try Excel Key to remove file protection. If you need to crack the VBA-password try this one.
This Excel add-in (password.xla) works fine in Excel 5.0 and above (including Excel 2000, XP and 2003).
This program will remove passwords of any length, also passwords containing special characters.
