Most of these Aspires have microphones built into the LCD bezel. Look for a tiny pinhole at the top of the LCD bezel. There may even be a small picture of a microphone etches into the plastic at that area.

Try going to the control panel and clicking on the mouse device. Uninstall the device by deleting it, and then reboot. If y our laptop is within a Wifi hot spot, then it should allow you to reinstall a new driver found on the Internet.
If this doesn't work, then try to go to the Acer.com website to find the driver for the touchpad, if available.
I know I lost touchpad button capability when I upgraded from Vista to 7 (32 bit). So, it is possible that your operating system doesn't support the touchpad very well.
