Now it will turn on for ~3 seconds and then go off with the red stand-by light blinking. I disconnecte the power with the same result.

Make sure all power connectors, cords and plugs are inserted securely and that the outlets are in good working order Be sure to select an audio source (CD, AM/FM, etc.) For powered systems, unplug the power pack for a few seconds, and then reconnect it. This allows the unit to reset itself after a power surge or power interruption. good luck!
SOURCE: Onkyo DR-C500 won't recognize discs
Onkyo units as well as several other manufacturers have a common problem where the spindle motor gets intermittant or wont come up to speed. Its not hard to replace this motor, but could be a trick to adjust the platter height. Also the unit probably needs a servo alighnment as well. This unit could also have a simple problem as a dirty laser lens. You can try to use a disc lens cleaner to see if that helps. Good Luck
