There is a blue (usually blue) 15 pin video connector on the back of the laptop, just connect the video cable from the monitor to this connector, and when you boot up the display will switch to this monitor.
Windows Media player need a Codex plugin to play DVD's. If you install a DVD play program such as PowerDVD it will install the Codex plugin, then you will be able to play DVD's with either PowerDVD or Windows Media Player.

You have not mentioned the make and model of the laptop. Anyway, the easiest would be to connect the other monitor to your laptop and from a key that has a monitor and the LCD made on it you can view the laptop on the monitor and do your work. You can then save your data to any removable media.

not completely sure but Ill give it a shot
might be something is going wrong with your monitor
or your monitor ID was not established try these 3 things
1. right click display after attaching trouble some monitor
go to properties click detect see if it identifies it properly then go to screen saver tab look under power saver mode is this monitor put under there if so change it.

2 go to control panel click on device manager scan plug and play then look under drivers is the right product listed and updated

3. ok this happens a lot look at the pins on both ends of your VGA cord monitor cord are they all there and line up properly ?
if they are missing then its your problem if bent gently with an object slowly push them back into place be very careful when you do this or they will break if the cord is shot and you can replace it theyre are some great cheap but nice cords even optical enhancing online pretty cheap

I hope my tips have helped good luck

Montiors shut off

if the monitor goes into standbye when you plug it into the computer , it generally means there is NO signal coming from your video adaptor.
Plug the old monitor in , if it works, ide suspect the new monitor(s) are not working correctly.
if it doesnt work , you need to restart the computer in safe mode by repettitively tapping the f8 button as the computer starts, before it says "starting windows".
If you have a signal on your monitor in safe mode, then most likely you have a bad or corrupted video driver and it will need to be updated.
if you have no video in safe mode , you will need to remove the cover and physiclly check that all add-in card power cables and memory chips are squarly seatied in there slots. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE COMPUTER AND DISCHARGE ANY STAIC BUILDUP IN YOURSELF BY GROUNDING (TOUCHING) SOMETHING METAL BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE THE COMPUTER.

AFTER YOU CHECK THESE THINGS AND TRECONNECT THE POWER AND TRY TO START......POST AGAIN HERE

Have a laptop with Windows XP home edition. It is hooked up to a brand new LCD through a RGB cord and audio wire, the LCD won't recognize it and the Gateway can't input the LCP to act as a second monitor...

I would test that lcd in another computer and or laptop or Television that has the same RGB / VGA wire connection and then you can see if from there if its the LCD thats bad or maybe your graphics card that might be bad on your computer. When you say the gateway cant input as a second monitor to play dvd's this could be an issue with the drivers if you have more than 1 graphics card on your desktop I need more information from you to further help you with this issue. Hope my answer gets you closer to a solution. Please Help rate me if I helped you out or not I am new but a very good tech.

How to hook up flat screen monitor??

That's all you need. Just a standard power cord plus the VGA connector cable. Plug the new monitor into the same spot as the old one.
