Hi
Thank you for your query
No this doesnt have anything to do with your battery.
As you can appreicate the your screen needs alot of power so when plugged in there is a continuous source of power so its very bright, however as your battery has only a limited charge, the screen will go dark to conserve
There are 2 ways of changing this
1) Press the fn key + the key with a sun symbol on there this is usually the up arrow key or the right arrow key, but will will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer
2) Click Start> Control Panel>Power options
Inside here you will be able to set what type of power profile you want running on Plug and battery

It's 2 yrs old....and no...no display at all now...I can hook it up to external monitor
I checked everything already, and your not going to believe this, but it just came back on. So maybe not the LCD display? Now it just went out.
gateway mt6707, screen is very dark. everything seems to work when connected to external monitor.
Any suggestions other than a new screen?
Same problem here. The laptop will power on and LEDS light but the screen remains dark. I plugged in an external monitor and then both the external monitor and laptop LCD worked. I unplugged the external monitor and it would power up and down and everything worked fine. After a while the screen went dark again and won't come on.
How old is and and are you saying you see no screen display at all
