POWER DRIVE FAULTY

My camera will not open properly - on switching on the lens comes out then makes noises and goes back in - at the same time the green led on the view finder flashes and a high pitched beep accompanies it - after several attempts to open the camera switches off. Tried new batteries not that then. Any ideas please Mark2

Try for a repair Mark but I feel that it is probably to be considered beyond economic repair - the price will be pretty near a later one

I have a cannon sx160is . When I power on the camera the lens comes out but the screen is black. When I turn the camera off the lens doesn't go all the way back in.

  1. Turn the power off, eject the battery pack, and reinsert it into the camera.
  2. Turn the power back on and check if the drive part of the lens moves properly.
  3. If the lens still will not open, retract or extend, then reset the camera.

The disc drive on my acer Aspire 5742G will not read any music cd's or dvds. I makes plenty of noise as though it is trying to open it but nothing!

The CD/DVD drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Remove this drive and insert it back into the laptop.
Next try cleanibg the drive.
The laser lens maybe dirty, use a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit to clean the lens int the drive.
If this does not fix your problem then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

When I open the lens door the lens doesn't come out. So the camera is not activated. The battery is fine and I can still connect the camera to my laptop. Somewhere I read that there is a little battery...

no there is no such little battery in the camera.there is one battery in the back of camera from which the battery gets power.if the charge in that battery is less or that battery is weak or faulty then this same problem of lens not coming will occur.but if you are confirmed that battery is properly charged and its not weak.then the problem may be either the lens assembly getting blocked or there is a motor inside the back of the lens assembly.the motor actually makes the lens assembly go back and forth.if that motor is got weak then this problem can occur.so the problem is either lens moving assembly got blocked or broken or the motor is weak/faulty. that has to be checked. before going for any internal repairing and checking .just be confirmed that camera battery is properly charged and working.in many cameras it has been noticed that due to weak or faulty battery this types of many problem occurs and replacing the battery solves the problem. this will help.please do rate the solution.keep updated for any further assistance if required. thanks.

Canon A720is turns on, but lens will not extend

I had the exact same problem. Since my camera is out of warranty, I decided to try to fix it myself; figuring the cost of repairing it would be close to the cost of a new, better camera. If yours is still under warranty, let Canon fix it for the cost of shipping.

I unscrewed all of the screws and carefully pried open the back of the camera. Part of it will come apart easily, but for the part that wouldn't, I slid a razorblade into the crack between the pieces and used it to separate the pieces.

I was shocked by what I found. The "mechanism" for switching between picture and review mode, appears to consist of a tiny black piece of something (doesn't look like metal, but I assume it's conductive). The physical switch that you operate on the back of the camera, appears to push this away from the circuit board. When that happens, the camera goes into review mode.

I assume that over time, this flimsy piece of whatever begins to wear out and eventually won't return to the circuit board. I slipped a small screwdriver under this piece and bent it back towards the circuit board.

That did the trick, The camera now functions as it's supposed to with one exception. Now, when I go into review mode, the lens won't retract (although it will when I power the camera down). Personally, I'm fine with that, because the lens going in and out is a huge waste of battery.

One thing I learned from this is that when you leave your camera inactive for long periods of time, make sure it's in picture mode, as this should reduce the strain on the flexible "switch".

Lens only comes half way out

I had a problem that may be related to yours. From time to time, whenever I opened the cover, the lens wouldn't work properly. It would make a grinding noise and then when I took pictures they would all come out out of focus. After much fiddling about, I eventually discovered that if I set ALL RESET to FALSE on the SETUP menu, it returned to normal. Possibly this could fix your problem. Otherwise maybe its a battery problem. My camera sometimes refuses to take pictures when the battery is low.
